"A band that plays songs that are over ten minutes long and the
lyrics contain words other than boogie". [Magazine quote C.1985] And that is the path
Pendragon have taken ever since.
Pendragon are what you might call a late developer; formerly known as Zeus Pendragon [no one seems to really know the significance of the Zeus part] the band formed in Gloucestershire in 1977 and although they were constantly touring, it wasn't enough to get them a record contract. In 1982, Pendragon stumbled upon a like-minded band called Marillion who were apparently getting a fair amount of media attention with this kind of "unfashionable music" (now called evolutive rock [progressive new generation]). The strange thing was, that although much of the media hated it , the fans loved it as if it were part of their very souls.
Pendragon started to get noticed. They were asked to play at the 1983 READING ROCK FESTIVAL in front of 30,000 people, they then got a session on the BBC FRIDAY ROCK SHOW and Marillion's manager started up a record label called ELUSIVE RECORDS and signed up Pendragon . Europe started to happen for Pendragon too, the band now tour in countries such as, France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, Holland and Poland as well as getting excellent media reaction from the likes of Q MAG UK, RADIO VERONICA HOLLAND, ROCK AND FOLK MAGAZINE FRANCE, ROCK HARD GERMANY, and stacks of others. Standing at the front of a recent new wave of interest in this kind of music, Pendragon started up their own record label, TOFF RECORDS which now handles all Pendragon releases. The real turning point for Pendragon and their record label, Toff, was in the release of the album simply entitled THE WORLD which takes the listener on a journey of musical fantasy and dreams, rich with melody and drama . The World was produced by Tony Taverner [who's worked with ELP, Hall and Oates, Jeff Beck ,etc.] and the stunning cover artwork was done by SIMON WILLIAMS who recently did the covers for the EMI Classic Experience releases.
Recorded at their own new 24 track studio, the next album was THE WINDOW OF LIFE and was released on November 8th 1993. With the release of The Window Of Life Pendragon reached new heights, it was their best selling album to date in the shortest period of time and was becoming widely known as the best Pendragon album so far, both with the public and the European music press. That was until.......THE MASQUERADE OVERTURE came along! The Masquerade has once again shown Pendragon beat all previous records with the sales of this classic album.
Now there is no stopping the unstoppable!
