Atomic Rooster was the brainchild of the late lamented Hammond organ genius Vincent Crane. Originally a member of the Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, he set up his own dynamic group in 1969 that enjoyed hit singles and featured a succession of fine singers, guitarists and drummers. "In Hearing Of" was the band's third album, first released in 1971 and included vocalist Peter French on some tracks (who would later find fame with Leaf Hound). It might sound like Babe Ruth is a legendary baseball player from Baltimore, but this 'Babe Ruth' is a rock group from Hatfield, England and once hailed as rising stars of Seventies rock. The group was formed by guitarist Alan Shacklock, who wrote most of the material on this debut album released by Harvest in 1972. The album did well in North America where it went 'gold' and, for a while, the group seemed destined for major career, although they finally split in 1976. Born out of the revolutionary fervour of the Sixties, Birth Control is still seen by fans around the world as representing the best of German progressive rock. Originally a six-piece student outfit from Cologne, the group was formed in 1968 and released its first album 'Birth Control' in 1970. They started out playing in a jazz-rock style influenced by such British organists as Brian Auger, and were famed for their extended arrangements - as featured on 'Gamma Ray,' here among the five tracks on this excellent 'live' set. Chris Farlowe was hailed as the new 'in' singer when Mick Jagger produced this superb album in 1966. Jagger was among many star vocalists who admired the Cockney lad with the powerful voice. Farlowe certainly had soul and a raucously powerful style. These assets are all exploited on an album promoted by fellow Farlowe enthusiast Andrew Loog Oldham and first released on the independent Immediate label. The original band was signed to Vertigo in 1970 and was fronted by guitarist and singer Norman Barrett, who had previously replaced Jimmy Page in Screaming Lord Sutch's Savages. Barrett was noted for his Hendrix inspired heavy riffs and feedback, and a unique vocal style well displayed on this 1974 album. This was the band's second release for the Dawn label and famed artist Roger Dean designed the original LP sleeve for the album, which proved to be the band's final album, and is now a much sought-after collectors' item. A uniquely talented British heavy rock band, Rumplestiltskin was the brainchild of American producer Shel Talmy. It was his idea to form a 'supergroup' that might rival the highly successful outfits that dominated the early Seventies, such as Status Quo and Led Zeppelin. Instead of picking young, untried rockers, Talmy brought together highly experienced professional session men. Among them was drummer Clem Cattini, who recalls the evolution of the group in a special interview for the informative liner notes. Although 'Rumplestiltskin' wasn't a hit, it was nevertheless a serious project, as can be heard on the eight powerful tracks on this CD re-issue of a classy album, first released in 1970. When Progressive Rock ruled in the early Seventies, it was a challenging period for new talent. As well as top acts like King Crimson, Genesis and Yes, a new wave of ambitious young groups were determined to experiment and play excitingly fresh music. Among them was Spring, from Leicester, England. They were a band that featured first class musicians, encouraged by the top names of the record industry. Spring's only album - now regarded as a Prog Rock masterpiece - was produced by Gus Dudgeon and engineered by Kingsley Ward, the founder of Rockfield Studios, who had discovered the band. 'Spring' features the vocals of Pat Moran and the lead guitar work of Ray Martinez, who later found fame with Showaddywaddy. Their drummer Pick Withers went on to work with Dire Straits. These eight tracks from the original LP, including ballads and rockers, are distinguished by the use of the Mellotron, which adds an eerie flavour to their sound. Hammering out the blues with locomotive power, Steamhammer was one of the best British groups of the late '60s. A hugely popular touring outfit they featured lead guitarist Martin Pugh, who is showcased on 'Speech' which proved to be the band's final album after its original release in 1972. The band was moving towards a more progressive rock style by the time they recorded 'Speech' and had undergone a few changes of personnel. Among the final recruits was bass guitarist Louis Cennamo who gives his personal memories of the final period in the band's career in an interview for the CD liner notes. This three-track album includes the extended work 'Penumbra' and is sparked by the drumming of Mick Bradley who passed away shortly afterwards and whose early death contributed to the break up of a fondly remembered group.

It was an astonishingly bold concept by the producer Lou Reizner to present the Who's rock opera 'Tommy' as a dramatised, all-star extravaganza. Originally released as a double LP in a slipcase with lavish, illustrations, this was the first ever 'coffee table' album. And it proved a huge best seller when first released in 1972 and helped on its way by the hit single version of 'Pinball Wizard,' sung with gusto by Rod Stewart on the album. 'Red Sea' was the second album by Warhorse, the band formed by former Deep Purple bass player Nick Simper. He had left his old group in 1969 and set up Warhorse with Ged Peck on guitar and Mac Poole - a mate of John Bonham - on drums. With Ashley Holt on vocals, the band proved a solid rock outfit and they released their debut 'Warhorse' on Vertigo in 1970. 'Red Sea' is truly a long lost classic. It features Pete Parks, formerly of Black August on lead guitar, having replaced Ged Peck. It originally came out in 1972 and proved to be their final release for Vertigo. The band underwent several personnel changes before finally breaking up. Among the original seven LP tracks is a stunning version of Shirley Bassey's hit 'I (Who Have Nothing),' as well as the title song, and such surging rockers as 'Back In Time' and 'Feeling Better.' This is expanded with a further 6 tracks, including a live track and 5 rare demo recordings. Time to re-discover this excellent, underrated band!

Galloping into action with a thunder of heavy metal hooves, Warhorse was a sturdy steed of the Seventies. The band was formed by former Deep Purple bass guitarist Nick Simper and their debut album was first released on the Vertigo label in 1970. Warhorse began life as a backing band for singer Marsha Hunt, but when Marsha came off the road, Simper reorganised the band with Ashley Holt (vocals), Ged Peck (guitar), and Mac Poole on drums. Rick Wakeman was in the band for a while, but was later replaced by Frank Wilson on keyboards, in time for their first record sessions. A long lost classic, this 12 track CD includes such titles as 'Vulture Blood' and 'Woman Of The Devil,' along with the band's version of the Easybeats' song 'St. Louis,' that was also issued as a single. A highly underrated outfit, Warhorse had a lot of potential, as can be appreciated from this fascinating glimpse into the archives.
