Strikingly innovative solo album from Patrick Campbell-Lyons, founder of legendary psychedelic group Nirvana. 'Heavy Petting' is the second album by Dr.Strangely Strange, the experimental Irish folk group beloved of the late broadcaster John Peel. Although a short-lived outfit, the good Doctor has been favourably compared to The Incredible String Band and their work has achieved cult status among record collectors. Formed in Dublin in 1967, the original group comprised Tim Booth (vocals, guitar), Ivan Pawle (bass and keyboards) and singer Tim Goulding. They augmented the line up with guest musicians for this album, including 16-year-old Gary Moore, later to achieve fame with Thin Lizzy. Gary's fluent guitar provides some of the best moments on this diverse and entertaining set of original songs, beefed up by drummer Dave Mattacks. Joe Boyd, the young American based in London, produced 'Heavy Petting.' which was first released on the Vertigo label in 1970. The album has eleven tracks, including such quirky songs, such as 'Ballad Of Wasps,' 'Summer Breeze,' and 'I Gave My Love An Apple.' There are hymns and laments, country jigs and boogie riffs - all played with lively enthusiasm and innocent charm. Born out of the revolutionary fervour of the Sixties, Birth Control is still seen by fans around the world as representing the best of German progressive rock. Originally a six-piece student outfit from Cologne, the group was formed in 1968 and released its first album 'Birth Control' in 1970. They started out playing in a jazz-rock style influenced by such British organists as Brian Auger, and were famed for their extended arrangements - as featured on 'Gamma Ray,' here among the five tracks on this excellent 'live' set. Drummer and vocalist Bernd 'Nossi' Noske - hailed as Germany's answer to Ginger Baker - backs up Bruno Frenzei (guitar, vocals) Peter Föller (bass and lead vocals) and Zeus B.Held (keyboards) on mostly instrumental performances, recorded during June 1974 at the Freiburg Ice Stadium and at the City Halls of Attendorn and Dorsten. Producer Dieter Dierks, using a mobile studio, captured these historic concerts for posterity. Originally issued as a double album to celebrate the band's fifth anniversary, 'Live' presents 70 minutes of power-packed progressive rock.

'Time Has Come Today' was a smash hit for the Chambers Brothers in 1968 when it got to Number 11 in the U.S.Billboard chart. Here is a welcome slice of pop history that showcases the work of excellent British vocalist and band leader Neil Christian. His group The Crusaders took up the sword way back in 1960, and after many years of struggle were rewarded when the single 'That's Nice' became a Number 14 UK chart hit in 1966. It was also highly successful in Germany. This 30 track definitive CD anthology covers the Christian era from 1962 to 1969. Among the A and B-sides and EP tracks are several boasting outstanding guitar work from Jimmy Page, who joined the Crusaders as a teenager. (Page plays a storming solo on the 1966 B-side 'I Like It' and is also heard on the Joe Meek produced 'Get A Load Of This' from 1963). 'Fuzzy Duck' is a drinking game. It is also the name was chosen by the band as an 'in-joke,' and became the title of this 1971 debut album. As one of the progressive era's most sought after artefacts, it gives us a fascinating glimpse back to a time when rock music was evolving at a furious rate. Fuzzy Duck has been compared to groups like Wishbone Ash, Camel and Atomic Rooster. They certainly maintain a high standard of musicianship. The Fuzzies formed in North London in 1970 and signed to Decca offshoot label MAM, but only 500 copies of their LP were pressed. This CD edition has eight tracks, including 'A Word From Big D," an entertaining performance from Roy Sharland offering his humorous 'ducking' vocals. Gravy Train was a Lancashire based progressive rock outfit, noted for its top class musicianship and songwriting skills. The original band was signed to Vertigo in 1970 and was fronted by guitarist and singer Norman Barrett, who had previously replaced Jimmy Page in Screaming Lord Sutch's Savages. Barrett was noted for his Hendrix inspired heavy riffs and feedback, and a unique vocal style well displayed on this 1974 album. Jade Warrior was one of the most intriguing and inventive bands signed to the Vertigo label in the early Seventies. Al Kooper - one of the seminal figures of the New York scene in the late Sixties - was a ubiquitous multi-instrumentalist and producer. He was also a talent scout, as became apparent when he discovered the remarkable guitarist and singer Shuggie Otis. After working with Bob Dylan and creating Blood, Sweat & Tears, Kooper began to devote more time to producing other musicians. Among the first results of this activity was a superb 1969 album that showcases the talents of Shuggie, then just 15-years old. The lad's youthful enthusiasm and energy blends with Kooper's more mature musical contribution on keyboards on a selection of songs and blues jams. Singer, pianist and guitar player Mickey Jupp, once known as the 'white Chuck Berry' formed his rock'n'roll band Legend in the late 1960s. Based in Southend On Sea, Legend was championed by the late John Peel and beloved of pub rock fans. This 'Legend' album is not to be confused with a subsequent Vertigo release, also called 'Legend' (aka 'The Red Boot' album). The musicians on the first Legend album, formed in 1969, comprised Mickey Jupp, Chris East (vocals, harmonica), Steve Geere (bass) and Nigel Dunbar (drums). They recorded this album for Bell Records in one eight hour session, featuring such acoustic blues songs as 'Natural Gas,' together with driving rockers 'Doncaster By Pass' and 'Twenty Carat Rocker.' This version of Legend broke up after just one gig, so their album has become a legendary souvenir and a collectors' item not to be missed.

The group fronted by guitar giant Leslie West released their debut album in 1970, and 'Mountain Climbing' is still regarded as one of their best works. Mountain was formed in New York in 1968 by West and bass guitarist Felix Pappalardi, who produced Cream's 'Disraeli Gears' album. Not surprisingly, Mountain's approach is somewhat influenced by Mssrs. Clapton, Baker & Bruce. However, the American group had its own well-defined style, revealed on Mountain's big hit single 'Mississippi Queen.' It's among the nine original album tracks included on this CD, together with four bonus single A and B-sides. This is heavy rock, with long solos and emphasis on Leslie West's prodigious technique. However, there are also more melodic performances, like their version of the Jack Bruce classic 'Theme For An Imaginary Western.'

An exceptionally powerful and experimental British rock trio, Quatermass was one of the most promising of all the early British progressive bands. They could have been rated alongside Deep Purple or ELP if they had just managed to break out into the 'big time.' A uniquely talented British heavy rock band, Rumplestiltskin was the brainchild of American producer Shel Talmy. It was his idea to form a 'supergroup' that might rival the highly successful outfits that dominated the early Seventies, such as Status Quo and Led Zeppelin. Instead of picking young, untried rockers, Talmy brought together highly experienced professional session men. Among them was drummer Clem Cattini, who recalls the evolution of the group in a special interview for the informative liner notes. Although 'Rumplestiltskin' wasn't a hit, it was nevertheless a serious project, as can be heard on the eight powerful tracks on this CD re-issue of a classy album, first released in 1970. The band also featured singer Peter Lee Stirling, who later scored a hit single with 'Beautiful Sunday' under the name of Daniel Boone.

A kind of maniac intensity pervades the powerhouse performances on this blues drenched CD. Much of the excitement is due to the presence of a 17-year old lead guitarist and singer, who would go on to fame and fortune. However, this is not the U.S. Skid Row (the one starring singer Sebastian Bach that came to prominence in the early 1990s). This dynamic trio came storming out of Belfast in 1970 and showcased the talents of none other than future guitar hero Gary Moore. Gary was clearly out to prove himself the equal of his favourite guitarists such as Eric Clapton and Peter Green. He certainly reveals a talent for speed and energy on such numbers as 'Mad Dog Woman' and 'An Awful Lot Of Woman.' Clever, intricate arrangements ensure the drums and bass are given as much work to do, while Gary skids into the crash barriers at 100 miles-an-hour. Historically and musically, this is a gem of an album that bridges 60s blues and 70s hard rock.

Spirit was one of the most exciting young American bands to enliven the late Sixties' rock scene. The exultant playing of teenaged lead guitarist and former Hendrix protege Randy California sparked a group that was also powered up by the drumming of Randy's stepfather Ed 'Mr.Skin' Cassidy. It was a fascinating set up that aroused much public interest at the time and was celebrated by the title of their second album, 'The Family That Plays Together.' First released in 1969, it proved hugely popular around the world, particularly in Germany and England. The album also spawned their debut hit single 'I Got A Line On You.' The song is among 11 tracks featured on this highly welcome CD re-issue. Singer Jay Ferguson wrote much of the material, although keyboard player John Locke contributes lyrics to the five bonus tracks. A classic album full of fresh ideas and dynamic energy.

When Progressive Rock ruled in the early Seventies, it was a challenging period for new talent. As well as top acts like King Crimson, Genesis and Yes, a new wave of ambitious young groups were determined to experiment and play excitingly fresh music. Among them was Spring, from Leicester, England. They were a band that featured first class musicians, encouraged by the top names of the record industry. Spring's only album - now regarded as a Prog Rock masterpiece - was produced by Gus Dudgeon and engineered by Kingsley Ward, the founder of Rockfield Studios, who had discovered the band. A Very Important Pop group. That was how the V.I.P.S. viewed themselves, when they set out to conquer the world at the height of the Swinging Sixties. Their journey began in Carlisle and their target was London, where a thriving music industry promised fame and riches. The lads from the North were so confident of success, that lead singer Mike Harrison told his young bride they would 'make it in three weeks.' An optimistic assessment as it turned out, but all part of the fascinating V.I.P.S. story, as told by Harrison in an exclusive interview for the liner notes to this super CD. Some 28 tracks - including singles and EPs - cover the band's entire career from 1964-67. They show a blues and soul 'covers' band evolving into more creative outfit, that later became Spooky Tooth. When great musicians collide, they produce bursts of energy and sparks of creativity. That's what happened when three of the stars of rock teamed up to form super group West, Bruce & Laing in 1972. These virtuoso players had already enjoyed the fruits of fame before they released their debut album 'Why Dontcha.' Leslie West was a powerhouse guitarist who had fronted Mountain, a band that also included drummer Corky Laing. The New Yorkers had been heavily influenced by Cream in the Sixties, and so when West managed to recruit Cream's legendary bass player Jack Bruce, it seemed like Leslie's 'dream band' had come true. With Bruce singing as well, the new outfit quickly became one of the most popular touring acts of the Seventies. This album shows a hot band blasting through a pleasing mix of blues, boogie and rock'n'roll. Among the ten original tunes are such feel-good numbers as 'Pleasure' and 'Love Is Worth The Blues.' The riff-laden title track is a virtual blueprint for the future of heavy metal. Dontcha miss this well-produced set of dynamic performances, that sounds as fresh as did yesterday.
