Emerson, Lake and Palmer's Manticore Records

Emerson, Lake and Palmer were one of the very first supergroups having converged from such groups as The Nice, King Crimson, Atomic Rooster and the Crazy World of Arthur Brown. And they lived up to the name being one of the prime innovators in the (at that time) youthful genre of progressive rock. They spawned many imitators, none quite approaching the genius of the original. Eventually they formed their own record label, Manticore Records, not only for their own releases, but for other progressive artists of the time (Pete Sinfield, Banco, PFM, etc.).

After the initial break up of the group in the late 70's, the label ceased operation as well. But in the last couple years Manticore Records has returned, initially to make available previously unreleased music. But one hopes the continued success of Manticore will bring about reissues of some of the original Manticore releases as well as some new original material!

Emerson Lake & Palmer are an English progressive rock super group. They found success in the 1970s and sold over forty million albums and headlined large stadium concerts - one of the largest at California Jam (Cal Jam) in 1974 was in front of 200,000 people. The band consists of Keith Emerson (keyboards), Greg Lake (bass guitar, vocals, guitar) and Carl Palmer (drums, percussion). They are one of the most commercially successful progressive rock bands and from the outset focused on combining classical pieces with rock music. The legendary rock band reunited to celebrate their 40th Anniversary and headlined London's High Voltage Rock Festival. This was the historic moment when Emerson Lake and Palmer performed for the first time since 1998. Last year marked Keith Emerson's return as composer and performer with the highly acclaimed CD, The Keith Emerson Band Featuring Marc Bonilla. This DVD captures the live recordings of six songs from that CD. Highlights include re-workings of several classic ELP tracks such as a full version of Tarkus, Karn Evil 9, Lucky Man, Bitches Crystal and The Barbarian. What distingushes these new arrangements has been the addition of guitar wizard, Marc Bonilla, both as singer and co-arranger. Lemon - This is an Official Bootleg by Emerson, Lake & Powell, and the mid 1980s ELP-splinter group, formed when Carl Palmer was still contractually obligated to record with Asia. Live In Concert, features a rare live recording from the group's only tour in 1986, from recently discovered recordings in Greg Lake's personal archives. With Palmer's blessing Emerson and Lake recruited fellow Brit Cozy Powell to handle the drums on new material the two had written and were planning to record. Powell, whose drumming style was very powerful and considerably different than Palmer's, helped create a new sound for the progressive music written by Emerson & Lake. Live In Concert, taken from a 1986 show recorded in Lakeland, Florida and has been digitally re-mastered. This newly re-mastered set comes with new sleeve-notes with comments from Greg himself and a enhanced booklet with rare photos and memorabilia.

Lemon - From the voluminous archives of the 'King Biscuit Flower Hour' comes this live set from Greg Lake (bass/guitar/vocals) at the Hammersmith Odeon in London on November 5, 1981. Lake, while on an extended hiatus from Emerson, Lake & Palmer (E.L.P.), recorded a pair of solo efforts in the early '80s. The show captured on Greatest Hits Live (2003) is circa his self-titled debut 'Greg Lake' (1981) and features the artist leading an impressive backing band with Gary Moore (guitar), Ted McKenna (drums), Tommy Eyre (keyboards), and Tristian Margetts (bass). The stage performance is interspersed with indisputable classics dating back to a pair of pre-ELP King Crimson cuts, as '21st Century Schizoid Man' and 'In the Court of the Crimson King' conclude this collection, both 'Fanfare for the Common Man' and 'Karn Evil 9' are given workouts. The sole acoustic side 'Lucky Man' is arguably the highlight, with Lake's skills as a performer and songwriter at their most prominent. This newly re-mastered set come with a new sleeve-note with comments from Greg himself and a enhanced booklet with rare photos and memorabilia.

Lemon - "From The Underground Volume 2 – Deeper Into The Mine," is a second collection of rare and previously unreleased recordings dating back to 1969 and Greg Lake's days in King Crimson. Also included are several never before-heard finished studio recordings taken from the sessions for Lake's two Chrysalis solo albums released in the 1980s; rare live recordings from Emerson, Lake & Palmer; and unreleased tracks from two Greg Lake splinter projects, EL & Powell and Greg Lake's Ride The Tiger (which included Yes/ Buggles/ Asia keyboardist, Geoff Downes). Among the rarest of the recordings on this collection are several finished studio masters of outtakes from the two Lake Chrysalis solo albums. He was backed by his 1981/83 solo band featuring guitarist Gary Moore and also by the Grammy Award winning pop band, Toto. Also included is a 1971 studio-quality live recording of Lake's most popular group, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, doing a previously unreleased song entitled 'Preacher Blues.'

US version of his 2008 album includes one exclusive bonus track over the Japanese and European pressings, 'The Barbarian' (a reworking of the classic ELP track). Former ELP/Nice keyboardist and Prog Rock legend is joined on this album by guitarist vocalist Marc Bonilla. .Since the split of ELP, Emerson kept himself busy with soundtracks and live performances but he never returned with a proper band and a Rock set up to the sound that all his fans love. This new version of his band features an explosive combination of the classic EL&P sound and modern progressive hard rock. Emerson's keyboard is flamboyant and explosive more than ever and his songwriting is still top level. Gregg Bissonette (ex David Lee Roth Band and LA super session player) is also part of the band. 19 tracks including 'Ignition', 'Crusaders Cross' and 'Last Horizon'.

The larger-than-life music created by ELP was dependent upon the equally sizable musical/personal egos of its members. The double-length WORKS VOL. 1 is arguably ELP's last great album. Taking the personal segregation to extremes, each member of the group was given one solo side (ah, vinyl) and they participated on one group-oriented side. Emerson is represented by a self-penned piano concerto, his finest straight-classical composition up to that point. Palmer exploits the full range of his percussive abilities on six varied instrumental tracks. Lake naturally offers up some impressive romantic balladry. The group side features the album's highlight; an orchestral epic tale called "Pirates," its intrigue-on-the-sea lyrics written by former King Crimson lyricist Pete Sinfield, and its music some of the most sophisticated ELP ever produced. This '77 release has been remastered from the original master tapes. It featured a side each of solo recordings by all three members and a fourth side of band recordings. 2 CD set.

On the two separately issued volumes of WORKS, we can see a band on the verge of coming apart. Though the songs and arrangements are uniformly strong, there's precious little interaction. Many songs seem to feature only one member of the band at a time, the other two presumably having little use for their mate's ideas. Ironically, this allowed the members' individual styles to be seen that much more clearly. Emerson's pianistic roots are made plain on impressive and unprecedentedly faithful renditions of "Maple Leaf Rag" and "Honky Tonk Train Blues" as well as an original tune--"Barrelhouse Shake-Down"--in a similar mold. Lake's balladic leanings are eloquently expressed in the poignant, devotional "Watching Over You." Palmer's precise polyrhythmic capabilities and previously underexposed compositional talents are seen on the instrumental "Close But Not Touching." This '78 release has been remastered from the original master tapes. It made the top 40 album chart and producing the hit single "I Believe In Father Christmas."

Works Orchestral Tour - Shot on August 26th, 1977 at Montral's famed Olympic Stadium, this concert film documents ELP's legendary Works Tour where, in 1977, Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer became the first rock band to assemble and tour with a full 65 piece symphony orchestra. Pulling this concert off was no small feat for the members of ELP who were under enormous pressure when this performance occurred before a sold out audience of 70,000 enthusiastic fans. This album by rock group PM was originally released in 1980 in Europe only. The band was formed by drummer Carl Palmer soon after Emerson, Lake & Palmer stopped working together in 1979. For his first post-ELP project, Palmer recuited vocalist Todd Cochran (from the band Automatic Man) and blues guitarist extraordinaire John Nitzinger. Although the group was short-lived (because Palmer went on to form the multi-platinum supergroup, Asia), in its brief time together PM made very energetic and powerful rock'n'roll. This record has long been a collector's item. Its release on CD comes with a fully digitally remastered mix which allows the music on this recording to sound bigger and more immediate than ever before.

The Isle of Wight Festival took place the last weekend of August in 1970. It was a legendary event for a number of reasons, not the least for it being the European counterpart to Woodstock, but for ELP fans it marked the performance debut of this supergroup! They had yet to release their first album and performed a set of mostly unheard new music, but still managed to steal the audience. This CD contain recordings of the very first performances of the ELP classics The Barbarian, Take a Pebble, Pictures at an Exhibition, Nutrocker and Rondo. As a bonus, it also includes an interview with the band as they discuss the Isle of Wight Festival.
