Magna Carta came into existence in 1989 to fill the demand for new progressive rock music. Bands such as Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Rush, ELP, King Crimson, Gentle Giant and the Moody Blues had developed major fan bases that were still longing to hear more of the same style music. A new generation of bands is carrying on the traditions of these musical forefathers.
Magna Carta intends to introduce the best of the new bands. We will continue to create special projects that pay homage to the originators. Magna Carta's mission is to use its resources to create a catalog of enduring work that can stand the test of time for all fans of progressive rock.
The line between creating high quality music and creating a commercially viable product is a difficult one to walk. But it has been Magna Carta's decision to make music that is artistically credible while appealing to a broad cross section of music lovers. In a genre where narrow-casting is applauded, Magna Carta chooses to be inclusive rather than exclusive.
Look for Magna Carta to expand its musical boundaries and try to give more audiences greater choices. Also be sure to check out their new subsidiary label, Pelican Sound Recordings, with a strong emphasis on jazz and fusion!

Penetrating a mundane and sterile music climate, Toronto based band The Android Meme unequivocally represents a revolution of social and political awareness. Humanity is forcefully divided and strategically eroded by commercial self-interests, propagating a western society that is being steered into madness. The Band: Stefano Dementia: vocals, programming, big brother; Mathias Devereaux: guitars, vocals, synthesizers, illusions; Mark Davidson: big bad bass man, webmaster; Jake Hamilton: drums, sorcery.

Giving themselves the opportunity to step out of the bounds of their home band, Daath, the two guitarists go wild throwing everything into the mix. After months in the studio they emerged with this album heavy on the atmosphere and volume.

OHMphrey/OHMphrey ....CD $15.99

(Excerpt from 'What's the Word, Thunderbird')
OHMphrey, the brainchild of three members of the Chicago-based jam-band Umphrey's McGee (keyboardist Joel Cummins, guitarist Jake Cinninger and drummer Kris Myers) and OHM guitarist Chris Poland, a legendary player who's perhaps best known for work with headbanging pioneers Megadeth, and bassist Robertino Pagliari (a.k.a. "Pag"), unleashes their improv-heavy self-titled debut a record that assimilates not only disparate musical genres but the individual playing styles of everyone involved. Gathering so much talent under one band banner, much less in one room, is historic. Then again, so often supergroups fail miserably and fall pitifully short of their potential. Fortunately for OHMphrey (and the rest of us), this project cuts against the grain in so many ways, not the least of which is by eschewing the pitfalls of modern production techniques in favor of a straight-ahead live recording setting. These extended instrumental jams are exciting and cohesive statements. The band seamlessly weaves together elements of metal, jazz, blues and prog rock.
Ethan Brosh/Out Of Oblivion ....CD $15.99

Out of Oblivion is the dramatic climax to Ethan Brosh's decade-long ascendancy to bona fide guitar hero status. Brosh's flawless technique references Bach as easily as headbanger metal icons Iron Maiden, neo-classical shredder Yngwie Malmsteen, and classic rockers, Boston. Brosh's perfect balancing act of accessible, yet, atmospheric metal neither panders nor alienates. Simply put, this is trend-bucking arena rock for instrumental guitar music freaks.

In the end, I am extremely happy with the result." Guest appearances by Randy Blythe, singer from Lamb of God.

Each has brought with him the experience of working on other projects; Michael Manring's constant solo touring, Alex Skolnick's new found interest in pursuing more jazz and fusion in his new home of New York City, and Tim Alexander's continued explorations into rhythm. The feel of "The Idiot King" rings like an updated version of those great Italian horror soundtracks of the seventies. Intense, atmospheric bass and guitar over the shifting backbeat of drums. Recalling an era of experimentation, when the boundaries between Jazz and Rock didn't really matter.

Together they most definitely play and participate, within these stand-alone yet unified
cinematic soundscapes.
Cairo/Time of Legends ....CD $13.99

The Cairo lineup has changed slightly - the band is now a three-piece, consisting of keyboardist Mark Robertson, vocalist Bret Douglas, and drummer Jeff Brockman. A handful of guest musicians - guitarists Luis Maldonado and Brian Hutchison, and bassist John Evans - round out the instrumental delivery of their latest album, "Time of Legends". As before, the music of Cairo is heavily centered around the keyboard. Lovers of Yes, ELP, Genesis and the other great keyboard-centric bands of the first golden age will fall instantly in love with Cairo's "Time of Legends". Cairo's third album is driven by virtuoso musicianship and conceptual songs. Cairo's lush arrangements, soaring melodies and sweet harmonies are as cinematic as they are evocative.
The Clinton Administration/One Nation Under a Re-Groove ....CD $13.99

This combination of well seasoned veteran funk and jazz players along with the more contemporary approach of the new groove and jam band players makes for a fat backbeat. "One Nation Uner a Re-Groove" draws its musical energy from some of the great songs of George Clinton's P-Funk years. This material seems to have more musical possibilities as time goes on and the broad spectrum of musical experience that these great players bring to these songs breathes an up-to-date respectability to the tracks. This is the first release on Magna Carta's new sub-label, Magnatude!

Bill Cutler/Crossing The Line ....CD $15.99

Crossing the Line represents a rare moment in the history of the music biz: it lives up to the decades-long hype that has been built up around it. Not many records released today benefit from the kind of perseverance Bill Cutler has shown in shepherding this project to the finish line. Simply put, Crossing the Line is a 'miracle' of modern music making, brought to life by a determined singer-songwriter, who has, for years, orbited within the Grateful Dead extended family universe. It's a fact of life, and rule of the music industry: When things appear too good to be true, they usually are. This is certainly not the case with Cutler's Crossing the Line, which features stars past, present and future, including Jerry Garcia (Grateful Dead), Bob Weir (Grateful Dead, RatDog), Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane), David Nelson and Dave Torbert (New Riders of the Purple Sage), Jerry Miller, (Moby Grape), harmonica ace Matthew Kelly (RatDog, Kingfish), Michael Falzarano (Hot Tuna), Mark Karan (The Other Ones, RatDog, Mickey Hart's Planet Drum), pianist Austin deLone (Elvis Costello, Boz Scaggs), steel guitarist Barry Sless (Phil Lesh & Friends, David Nelson Band), and guitarist Scotty Quik (Sammy Hagar). Garcia's tracks may be the last unreleased studio tracks of Jerry's legendary career. Writing and recording Crossing the Line has been a long journey for Cutler. "It was a big challenge seeing this project through, but I feel it represents some of my best work as a songwriter," Cutler says. "I can't think of another album like this."

Explorers Club/Raising the Mammoth ....CD $13.99

Four tracks, two tracks, 44 tracks or just one (that's lead expeditioner Trent Gardern's choice)... no matter how you carve up this Mammoth, a dark, delicious and difficult progressive rock steak dinner awaits those brave enough to attack and hack. But in simple terms here's the deal: Trent Garnder (Magellan, Leonardo, the first Explorers Club album and countless other heavy roles on other prog works), is mental central, using the Explorers Club platform as launching pad for his profuse and spiritually replenishing art rock concepts. So this is the second Explorers Club album. The line-up is similar to the first with some key differences. New to the six-string chapter of the club are ex-Megadeth axeman Marty Friedman, Kansas legend Kerry Livgren and Shadow Gallery's Gary Wehrkamp, who provide most of the album's crunch. At vocals, James LaBrie is back, co-working 'Vertebrates.' Zappa's Terry Boxxio is back as well. But it is the presence of Steve Walsh on 'Passage to Paralysis' and 'Broad Decay' that really puts a new stamp on the Explorers travelogue. And the cast is ably rounded out with Dream Theater's John Myung on bass and Cairo's Mark Robertson on keyboards.
Michael Lee Firkins/Black Light Sonatas ....CD $15.99

In 1990, Michael Lee Firkins released his self-titled debut album. This release showcased Michael's signature sound of rock blended with country, blues and jazz. With the strength of this album, and the help of an international advertising campaign from YAMAHA GUITARS, his first release sold more than 100,000 copies. This well received album also landed Michael the winner of the "BEST NEW TALENT" reader's poll in Guitar Player magazine and Guitar for the Practicing Musician. He was also hailed as "ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL PLAYERS OF THE NEXT TEN YEARS" by Guitar for the Practicing Musician. As Michael's music was also popular in Europe, Firkins won the Edison Award, which is Holland's version of a Grammy. To many, Firkins has been a guitar genius Howard Hughes-style recluse, exploring musical and personal territories that have been the subject of ongoing curiosity and discussion for years from the Firkins watchers around the world. His decision to excuse himself from the bustle of the business, lucrative session work says more about his sincere, natural playing style than dissecting his mental state or physical well being among the guitar-loving intelligentsia. With his new album, "Black Light Sonatas" Michael Lee Firkins has broken some personal and musical boundaries and will re-ignite talk of him being the "next great guitar player."

Fareed Haque Group/Cosmic Hug ....CD $14.99

There are guitar players, and then there are guitar players. Fareed Haque is of the latter category, a virtuoso. Fareed enjoys a career that spans the spectrum of musical styles. And to say that he kills it on the six-stirng would be an immense understanement: he plays acoustic and electric guitar, sitar and even a hybrid guitar/sitar. The Fareed Haque Group, equipped with two keyboardists, bassist, drummer and tabla player, has been described as a 'tantric meditation.' With diverse cultural and musical influences, Fareed Haque Group is opening new doors with a completely fresh approach to cosmic music that grooves.
The Hideous Sun Demons/The Hideous Sun Demons ....CD $14.99

From very structured pieces to wide open jams, The Hideous Sun Demons cover a vast array of styles on their self-titled debut album of all instrumental tracks. Formed by drummer Ray Luzier, the band began to take shape when Japanese guitarist Toshi Hiketa was brought on board. Bassist James Lomenzo became interested in the project and the three players began to write material together. Each member has recorded extensively with household names from the world of rock'n'roll. In addition they have all been involved as music instructors at prestigious music schools such as GIT, Osaka School Of Music and PIT. With a love of classic science fiction and horror movies, The Hideous Sun Demons have vowed to stake their claim in the musically high tech world inhabited by such musical super heroes as Liquid Tension Experiment, Niacin and Bozzio Levin Stevens. As a result the group naturally gravitated to Magna Carta as their musical home.
Ice Age/The Great Divide ....CD $13.99

In this verdant, vibrant age of progressive metal, it's quite the treat to hear a band stride confidently forth with more of a nimble, traditionally progressive rock approach, Ice Age thenceforth advancing past the masters, into often overlooked tones from bands like Styx, Kansas, Canada's Saga, even Journey. For this is a band steeped in Americana, but flavored with worldly spice, most of it contributed by the band's Euro-tinged guitarist Jimmy Pappas, who is actually a transplanted American from Greece. Rounding out the band, we've got Arron DiCesare, a native Bostonian who has studied at his city's venerable music school, the Berklee College Of Music, ex-Cold Steel drummer Hal Aponte, and the band's lead vocalist, keyboardist and lyricist Josh Pincus. While the daunting chops wizardy of DiCesare and Aponte provide a rockbed of exotic and mathematical rhythm experiences, Pappas and Pincus create a marriage, and often a productive tension, between those age old rivals, keyboards and guitars.
Kansas/Somewhere to Elsewhere ....CD $13.99

James LaBrie/Prime Cuts ....CD $15.99

James LaBrie is at his shining best here. A must have for any fan of Dream Theater or progressive music. James showcases his unforgettable vocal prowess with his high and powerful range. Strong, aggressive songs are the perfect template to display his world class talents. James LaBrie's Prime Cuts shows that he's more than just a phenomenally talented singer but he's a solid songwriter as well. Excellent musicianship all around that is sure to please almost all prog metal and Dream Theater fans. Features performances by many great musicians, including Steve Morse, Mike Portnoy, Terry Bozzio, John Myung, Billy Sheehan and many, many more.
James LaBrie's Mullmuzzler/Mullmuzzler 2 ....CD $13.99

James LaBrie's powerplant of players - Matt Guillory, keyboards/piano; Trent Gardner, keyboards/piano; Mike Mangini, drums; Mike Keneally, guitars; Mike Borkosky, guitars; Brian Beller, bass - has convened once more for an album that is a rainbow of expressions stridently apart from the man's vocal and lyrical mastery emanating from the man's work with Dream Theater. And "Mullmuzzler 2", as the title would suggest, is the follow-up to a debut ('99's "Keep It To Yourself") that quickly became one of the most highly regarded albums ever released through the Magna Carta label. James LaBrie's "Mullmuzzler 2" takes some chances, chances that one would not imagine coming from a progressive rock icon such as James. LaBrie has tapped deep emotional wells within this record, expanding on the themes of communication and the lack thereof that he handled so well on "Keep It To Yourself", while setting these sincere confrontations with the self to musical soundtracks that are lush, melodic, and wholly committed, in two cases, to the concept of ballad.
Tony Levin/Prime Cuts ....CD $14.99

Bassist and multi-instrumentalist, Tony Levin, is one of the rare few that lives a life of sacrifice to the creative muse - wherever it takes him. Over the last thirty-some years, that muse has lured Tony into recording collaborations with the major artists of our era, everyone from John Lennon to Peter Gabriel, King Crimson to Alice Cooper, Terry Bozzio to David Bowie, Tracy Chapman to The Indigo Girls. And so many more. "Tony Levin/Prime Cuts" showcases Tony's Magna Carta collaborations with music greats such as Terry Bozzio, Steve Stevens, John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy and Jordan Rudess. It includes a Tony Levin track exclusive to this CD, a bonus 16 minute audio interview with Tony and an unreleased MP3 from the LTE2 sessions!
Liquid Tension Experiment/Liquid Tension Experiment (LP) ....double vinyl LP $22.99

Armed with chops, taste, and panache, LTE groove. Throughout, the staggering speed and technique of Dream Theater's Petrucci, Portnoy and Rudess with bassist Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson) consistently grab center stage. It's a riveting work from start to finish and a scorching testament to the power of musical inspiration and collaboration. Now, available for the first time for vinyl junkies and collectors of one of the all-time classic albums of prog metal and one of Magna Carta's best selling CD titles. Special packaging and amazing sonics.
Liquid Tension Experiment/Liquid Tension Experiment 2 ....CD $13.99

It's no secret in the industry that the first Liquid Tension Experiment album was both a creative and commercial success for Magna Carta Records, the label gambling on the fact that their fan base could take a trip that prog-rock-dangerous and emerge unscathed and, in fact, renewed. It seems that the band felt the same joy in the making that the label felt in the promoting. For, indeed, Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci (both from Dream Theater), bass monster Tony Levin (no resume required), and keyboardist Jordan Rudess (the same line-up as on the first album), had such a great time together that Jordan was tapped for the keyboardist post within Dream Theater. So all of a sudden, Liquid Tension Experiment becomes 3/4 of Dream Theater with the fourth wheel being possibly the most respected bassist in the business, Tony Levin. But this animal is a thornier beast than the lush prog rock of Dream Theater. Liquid Tension Experiment is about fierce creative interaction, a mixture of the spontaneous and the composed, almost violent but good-natured collision (think bumper-cars) countered with periods of solitary introspection.
Liquid Trio Experiment/Spontaneous Combustion ....CD $15.99

In October 1998, Liquid Tension Experiment reunited at Millbrook Studios in upstate New York to record their 2nd album. A few days into the sessions, John Petrucci's pregnant wife went into premature labor leaving Mike Portnoy, Jordan Rudess and Tony Levin stranded in an already set-up and booked recording studio. So like any creative and productive musicians would do, they decided to stay and JAM...and JAM they did! Over the course of two days, they played for hours on end. The Trio consciously did not "compose" or "write" anything. They simply went wherever the music took them. Several of these jams ended up being used on LTE2. The rest of this music has remained unreleased until now. For some bizarre and still unexplained reason, the master tapes of these jams were misplaced during the mixing process. But, luckily, Portnoy records almost everything he ever does and as a result his live 2-track stereo DAT mixes are the only remaining traces of this historic jam. So what you have here is as live and raw as it gets. No overdubs, no editing, no mixing. Just 3 guys, their instruments and their spontaneous imaginations feeding off of each other. Spontaneous combustion. So finally - almost 10 years later - here are Mike Portnoy, Jordan Rudess and Tony Levin flying by the seat of their collective, musical pants. Better late than never!
Magellan/Hundred Year Flood ....CD $13.99

Apparently Trent Gardner has a progressive music demon in him that won't let him rest. Along with the new Explorers Club release, Raising the Mammoth, Trent has been hard at work on the new Magellan album, Hundred Year Flood. Along with brother Wayne Gardner on guitars and Joe Franco on percussion, Hundred Year Flood features guest appearances from Ian Anderson, Tony Levin, Robert Berry and George Bellas. Included on this release is the 34 minute epic, The Great Goodnight, a conceptual work set in the Viet Nam War era.
Steve Morse/Major Impacts ....CD $13.99

"I'd have to say that 'Major Impacts' has been one of the most captivating things I've ever done," offers Steve Morse. "The concept was for me to write music that reflected the styles of some of the musicians that had influenced me." As a result, Major Impacts is an incredibly dense, value-added collection of rock guitar phrasing, Morse superimposing the weight and authority of his own highly emotive approach o'er top the styles of what comprises a canny and selective roll call of rock's most 'impactful' pioneers. The influences Steve drew upon to compose and perform this album include Eric Clapton/Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Eric Johnson, Alex Lifeson, The Byrds, Jimmy Page/Led Zeppelin, John McLaughlin/Mahavishnu Orchestra, Keith Richards/The Rolling Stones, Leslie West/Mountain, George Harrison/The Beatles, The Allman Brothers Band, Kansas and Yes. Through an esteemed catalogue that includes records with the Dixie Dregs, Kansas and Deep Purple, as well as solo works, Morse has coursed a lifeblood through the art of the guitar.
Steve Morse/Major Impacts 2 ....CD $13.99

Carrying on the theme from the first Major Impacts, Steve includes another selection of his favorite guitarists and keyboardists. Includes songs in homage of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; The Who; Aerosmith; Emerson Lake & Palmer; The Yardbirds; ZZ Top; Genesis; Spirit, Deep Purple, Ted Nugent; and Lynyrd Skynyrd... Featuring Steve Morse: guitars, keyboard, various extraneous instruments; Dave LaRue: All bass guitars; Van Romain: All drums and percussion.
Steve Morse/Prime Cuts ....CD $14.99

A collection of Steve's finest work from his Magna Carta sessions. Featuring performances by: Terry Bozzio, Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci, Jordan Rudess, Billy Sheehan. Bonus: 11 minute video interview with Steve
Steve Morse Band/Split Decision ....CD $13.99

The Steve Morse Band; Steve Morse, Dave LaRue and Van Romaine have recorded a brand new project for Magna Carta. Through an esteemed catalogue that includes records with Dixie Dregs, Kansas and Deep Purple, as well as solo works and man-to-man collaborations, Morse has coursed a lifeblood through the art of the guitar. And lifeblood is a strangely fitting term; given the man's good-natured, eager and lively sound, his enthusiastic, amiable and nimble steps up the fretboard into the upper echelons of the guitar's hallowed halls. According to Brian Moritz, assistant engineer on Split Decision, "What's most interesting to me is that compared to the other SMB CD's released so far, they've kind of leaned towards doing material that they could play live as a three-piece, and this time there are some way more densely orchestrated songs. Steve plays some upfront keyboards on a couple of songs, and there are several songs with numerous guitar tracks where there are lots of counterpoint melodies happening - way cool stuff. Steve said he really tried to push the boundaries, and he certainly did... You'll definitely be surprised."
Mullmuzzler/Keep It to Yourself ....CD $13.99

James LaBrie has seen stunning commercial and critical success throughout the '90's with his band, Dream Theater, that pantheon of progressive rock, this past decade. But gathering steam before the millenium, each and every member of the band has also been busy with side projects. But unlike his bandmates, LaBrie's record is a true solo offering (despite the playful band moniker), perhaps reflecting that special place we hold for both vocalists and lyricists, perhaps reflecting the highly personal place words hold within our heart. So, with the help of the venerable Terry Brown, producer of Rush's output during the '70's, James built, shaped, then fine-tuned nine distinct, heartfelt and often bombastic tracks, all of them co-writes with an army of the field's hottest creators including members of Shadow Gallery, Matt Guillory of Dali's Dilemma, and Trent Gardner from Magellan and Exploreres Club. So the writers planted the seed and the plaerys made it grow. Towards that end, Jame tapped co-writer and keyboardist Matt Guillory, scary Zappa-orbiting guitarist Mike Keneally and his gravity-defying bassist from Beer for Dolphins, Bryan Beller, plus Mike Mangini (best known for his work with Extreme and Steve Vai) for a little musical witchery down in LA. The result is a banquet of purifying rock, some of it slamming in a Zeppelin frame of mind, some of it reminiscent of Queen and possibly Styx, some of it simply the most elegant classic rock you will ever hear.
Niacin/Deep ....CD $13.99

This is an incredible new release from Niacin, their fourth, definitely an instrumental supergroup, featuring Billy Sheehan on bass, John Novello on keyboards, and Dennis Chambers on drums (check out Dennis' excellent work with Gary Willis' fusion band). Though more of a fusion band in previous recordings, with Deep they present an hommage to the progressive rock movement in the 70's as well as an hommage to the glorious sounds of the almighty Hammond B-3! This album will draw lots of comparisons to that all time classic Hammond B-3 band, Emerson, Lake and Palmer and fans of that group, as well as prog lovers in general, will definitely rejoice at this album!
Niacin/Live-Blood Sweat & Beers ....CD $13.99

Niacin seems to have a pattern that they follow. They write songs that allow them to show off their amazing musical gifts collectively and individually. They carefully select memorable songs to cover and reinterpret them in their own powerful, soulful style. Niacin then goes into the studio and is able to infuse this material with a feel and an energy that is not easy to come by in a studio situation. Every so often, Niacin takes the show onthe road and amazes audences who cannot believe that three such virtuosi exist in one group. "Live-Blood Sweat & Beers" is evidence that these three masters can make this happen with a roomful of people in front of them. Billy Sheehan (bass), Dennis Chambers (drums) and John Novello (Hammond B-3) have all done great things in projects outside of Niacin. But it is the sum of the three of them that makes Niacin such a unique and identifiable force.

Billy Sheehan, John Novello and Dennis Chambers have produced another stellar album of imagination, virtuosity and strength all the while redefining the term, "power trio". Niacin even takes on Frank Zappa's "King Kong" on this all instrumental studio album. Includes a bonus track on the US version of the CD.
Niacin/Time Crunch ....CD $13.99

Niacin's music is a delicious combo of rock and jazz sounds which are tantalizing on their own, gut-punch powerful when properly combined: the thick and rich atmosphere of John Novello's B3 organ, Dennis Chambers' locomotive-with-an-intelligent-mind-of-its-own drumwork, and the finger-breaking bass work of the legendary Billy Sheehan. On Time Crunch, their fifth album and second for Magna Carta, they shatter preconceptions of the jazz/fusion trio just as swiftly as a hammer shatters a watch. Prog-heads will be delighted to see that one of the two covers on this album is the legendary King Crimson tune "Red." (The other, by the way, is Jan Hammer's "Blue Wind.") The song always carried a good deal of menace, but filtered through the thick Niacin tone, it sounds positively terrifying. "Red was an interesting tune," says Novello. "Billy wanted a very distorted B3 sound, and so we went in that direction. Reminds me of Mike Ratledge's organ tone from the band Soft Machine." Time Crunch will take you through a dozen moods, leading you firmly, sometimes gently, through soundscapes that are nostalgic and retro, and yet, at the same moment cutting edge and modern. It will lead you from the power-funk of "Elbow Grease" to the elegance of "Glow" (a song dedicated to John's wife, Gloria Rusch Novello, who lost her battle to breast cancer last year), and back again.

Ed Wynne has solved the mystery of time travel. As the keyboardist/guitarist/chief progragrammer/creative mastermind of the band Ozric Tentacles, Wynne traverses the ages through his primordial yet distinctly modern, mind-bending music. The Somerset, UK resident is a citizen of the world, his art knows no boundaries in time or space. Wynne jokingly refers to OT's music as "ethnological forgery." Recorded in Wynne's home studio, the nine-track, all-instrumental CD is a musical reflection of Wynne's centrifugal creative vision - a vision synthesized into a spiraled, multifaceted tapestry of butt-moving, trance-inducing ethno-techno space rock. In many ways "The Floor's Too Far Away" ios a signature Ozrics record. Rife with incessant intergalactic grooves, the new record offers a satisfying, near state-altering listening experience.

It's no exaggeration that King's X is one of the most beloved and influential bands amongst musicians and discerning rock fans who've studied the genre over the last 15 years. Huge artists have cited Ty Tabor, Jerry Gaskill and Doug (now Dug) Pinnick as torrid, live-changing inspirations over the years, and each corner of the King's X trinity has continued to write exquisite, melodic metal confections as solo artists, expanding on a catalogue that, even at the core, grows swiftly and gracefully as flavors of the day pass on by. Emotional Animal is the King's X bassist/vocalist's third solo album with help from the rest of the King's X family - Jerry Gaskill's son Jay on drums and mastered by Ty Tabor.
Dug Pinnick/Strum Sum Up ....CD $15.99

Like a slice of Pinnick's raw essence, "Strum Sum Up" is so free, so instinctual; it's Pinnick as you've never heard him before. This raw, wah-wah-injected groove machine is powered by the stellar talents of Wally Farkas of Galactic Cowboys fame, Army of Anyone's Ray Luzier, Billy Idol's guitar wizard Steve Stevens, Hal Sparks, 11's Alain Johannes, Kellii Scott, David Henning, and Pinnick himself (on guitar).
Mike Portnoy/Prime Cuts ....CD $14.99

A collection of Mike's finest work from his Magna Carta sessions. Over the years, Magna Carta has provided Portnoy with a number of diverse playing environments. Some of them, such as Liquid Tension Experiment, have been wildly popular, so much so that cross-pollination has occurred between mother group and spawn. Others have been, at very least, provocative and musical. In all of them, the drummer's essence shines, as is evident in the current collection of choice Portnoy-fed tracks. Mike Portnoy represents the perfect marriage of the garage band enthusiast and the intellectual fusion artist. His exploration of that array of toms is as playful as it is artsy, just as his integration of timbales is as explorative as it is Latin. A few years back he said, 'I'm a drumset player, not a percussionist. My interest in percussion is more of an embellishment to drumset playing.' Accordingly, whatever diverse instrument Mike brings home to his kit, he employs to good effect, creating brash melodic runs or rousing exclamations. Meanwhile, it's relentless bass drums and washing cymbalsthe heart of rock & roll. Portnoy gets to do it all. This is plain in Mike Portnoy: Prime Cuts.

This album is comprised of performances from that concert and studio recordings he improvised the following week in his studio. Jordan performs on a fantastic 9 foot Steinway Grand as well as a Kurzweil 2600 and a Korg Karma. Magna Carta is proud to help Jordan reach a Worldwide audience for this special event. Jordan Rudess/Prime Cuts ....CD $15.99

A child prodigy on piano, Jordan's musical journey predates his association with Magna Carta Records. And, yet, that label holds a special significance that ought to be noted at the outset of the release of Jordan Rudess: Prime Cuts. As it turns out, in the eighties Jordan stood at the crossroads, faced with a choice between Dream Theater and another significant prog band. Push came to shove and, for various reasons, Rudess allied himself with the Dregs. In that forum, and in subsequent ones, Rudess honed his distinctive sound and approach, culling commendations from the musical press. It wasn't until the late nineties that Rudess answered the call for a special project under the aegis of Magna Carta, Liquid Tension Experiment. It was his stirring performance with this lineup that commended Rudess as the next keyboardist for Dream Theater, a role Jordan enjoys to this day. Many albums have ensued, not to mention many a road jaunt to all points North American, European, and Asian. Jordan Rudess is recognized as the leading keyboardist in rock music today.
Jordan Rudess/Rhythm Of Time ....CD $14.99

Jordan also introduces guitar phenom, Daniel J., on his first major release. Jordan Rudess is recognized throughout the world as the premier rock keyboardist today. He is considered to be the major songwriting contributor to the exceptional material of Dream Theater and Liquid Tension Experiment. Alex Skolnick made his name as a six-string guitar slinger in the Bay Area with thrash legends, Testament, and now each holiday season is one of the featured performers with The Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Apparently fed up with metal in the late 1990's, he went to music school and hooked up with a couple of jazzers with the idea of doing exploratory fusion-jazz, using the heavy metal songbook for standards (and inspiration) and not the "regular" (or, it could be argued, "over-covered") classic jazz songbook. For their second Magnatude release, "Last Day In Paradise," Alex Skolnick Trio has written some very well crafted material like 'Western Sabbath,' and 'The Lizard.' But Alex makes certain that he also returns to what has become a trademark of this unit by playing the Testament classic, 'Practice What You Preach,' reinterpreted as a Latin jazz piece as well as Rush's 'Tom Sawyer' in a power jazz trio setting.
Alex Skolnick Trio/Transformation ....CD $14.99

Straight ahead jazz mixed with heavy metal? Welcome to the world of the Alex Skolnick trio. When they first began in 2000, the idea was admittedly a bit far out: an improvisational trio doing creative arrangements of tunes by groups such as Black Sabbath. Even more unusual was the fact that this combo was led by a former speed metal guitar hero who had traded his electric guitar for a hollowbody archtop (known as a 'jazz box'), moved to New York and studied with legendary musicians through the jazz department of New School University, where he earned his BFA. It was here where Alex hooked up with two fiery young prodigies in their early 20's on upright bass and drums; the three began practicing composition assignments and jazz standards. Frustrated with the limitations of the jazz repertoire, Alex stumbled upon this concept one night by hearing an arrangement of a Scorpions song in a dream. Arrangements of songs by Kiss, Ozzy Osbourne, the Who and others followed; the group quickly developed a following in such New York City venues as Wetlands and the Knitting Factory. The new trio album, "Transformation," represents a turning point for the band. Original compositions fill just over half the album along with new arrangements of tunes by Judas Priest, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, and more.
Speakers for the Dead/Prey for Murder ....CD $11.99

From Fresno, CA., Speakers for the Dead is a band that combines hard rock, hardcore, metal, and melodic choruses with a skull bashing intensity. Put together with players from high profile bands in the Fresno music scene, SFTD has become one of the biggest draws in that part of California. As "Prey For Murder" was being recorded, it appeared as if a sudden, serious illness for guitarist, Jason Garcia, would derail all their plans. Yet, through sheer determination and will power, Garcia still was able to complete his portion of the recording as well as appear with the band at live shows. During that entire time period, Jason continued to receive treatment for his illness. His is a remarkable story that continues to play itself out.

Tempest/Balance ....CD $13.99

The high-energy Oakland, California-based band features a Norwegian singer with a double-necked mandolin, a Cuban drummer, an electric fiddle virtuoso, an imaginative bassist, and a guitarist with a penchant for heavy rock pyrotechnics. Together, these gifted musicians sculpt uplifting sonic art equally steeped in Celtic, Pan-European and American influences. In the last 12 Tempest has released nine CD's and played more than 1,000 shows. With an approach that finds it alternating between bringing folk music to its knees and rocking like the possessed, Tempest's records and gigs receive consistent worldwide critical acclaim. Their newest release, Balance, is produced again by Robert Berry who also lends his talents on B3 Hammond organ, synthesizer and harmony vocals.
Tempest/The Double Cross ....CD $14.99

Some have described Tempest as a folk-rock band. Their repertoire is based primarily around traditional folk songs and they definitely rock, so that part is accurate. A Norwegbian lead singer, a Cuban drummer, a bass player from Austria, an Irish guitarist and a mad fiddler stir up this musical soup. Tempest's forte is the live environment and 'The Double-Cross' is a great representation of their live presentation without being a 'live' album. Produced and recorded by respected producer and musician, Robert Berry, 'The Double-Cross' can be truly defined as a 'party' album, assuming that the part consists of Irishmen, Scots and Vikings partying like it was 999!
Tempest/Shapeshifter ....CD $13.99

More than just a folk-rock band, the Celtic themes and traditional folk-rock songs on this record are interpreted by a Norwegian singer, a Cuban drummer, a Bay Area bassist, an Irish guitarist, and a fiddle player who has worked with legends Richard Thompson and John Renbourn. After 14 years, they continue to tour, and will be making high profile appearances at large summer festivals this year. Shapeshifter is their latest studio release once again produced by and featuring Robert Berry.

Totalisti/Slave To None ....CD $14.99

What this Enumclaw, Washington band have come up with on their strident 'Slave to None' is a snarling combination of progressive metal and aggressive modern metal that has neretofore never been witnessed, track after track building brick-on-brick a record that is as enigmatic as it is surprisingly groove-steeped. The swerling, exotic, percussive, yet seamless feel of 'Slave to None,' no doubt has a lot to do with the producer for the album, none other than Queensryche drummer Scott Rockenfield. With influences as diverse as Demon Hunter, Extol, Tool, Rush, Dream Theater, Korn and Incubus, it is no surprise that Totalisti have creatd a surging, provacative, pounding yet expertly constructed and detailed record of near indescribably proportions. Vocally Totalisti are well outside typical conventions as well.
Under The Sun/Under The Sun ....CD $13.99

The term progressive rock just won't do. Not when you're discussing the
bombastic, purifying, spiritual, cathedral-ceilinged enigma that is California's Under The
Sun. Band sage Chris Shryack can wade into the name game with ease, but wade is as far as
he will, or should go. Can something this Large and Panoramic be called progressive rock,
or even neo-prog? Likely not. Chris amusingly thinks about it for an instance, and decides
that he likes the term "cinematic symphonic art rock."
Perhaps a good touchstone. But Under The Sun is so much more. Having formed ten years ago,
the band's self-titled debut is likely the most shamelessly textured, unabashedly
spiritual and unapologetically intellectual art rock record since The Yes Album. And above
the fray, through the rock, and under the sun, the band codifies and gold-plates the
display within songs that are often immediate, accessible, not too lengthy, and expertly
laden with driven power chords. Comparisons with any era of Rush really won't fly here.
Think early Yes, early Genesis, German prog from the '70s, Dream Theater riffing, and
perhaps brainiac songwriting from the likes of Peter Hammill or Roy Harper.
Vapourspace & Various Artists/Sonic Residue From Vapourspace ....CD $13.99

That's right, a remix project !! Our friend Vapourspace (Mark Gage) has been remixing tracks from many of our artists into a brand new album. Tracks from Steve Walsh, Niacin, Tempest, Liquid Tension Experiment, Bozzio Levin Stevens, Steve Morse and Attention Deficit have been transformed into brand new pieces of music. Here is a bit of what our friend Jedd wrote for the Ytsejam website: The record starts simply enough-it ploughs its way through three brilliant takes on three brilliant tracks: Attention Deficit's "Girl From Enchilada," Niacin's "Blue Mondo," and Steve Morse's incomparable "Led On," and sends them into a new existence where they become extended, layered head trips that will please even the purest purist proggie. You get the feeling, listening to these tracks, that they were all born this way, brought into the world amidst the funky noise and late-night glow that Gage places upon them and that's as it should be. Like an artist taking on a cover tune, Gage makes these tunes his own: Liquid Tension Experiment's "Another Dimension" and Tempest's "Jenny Nettles" also take on previously inconceivable dimensions as Gage works his magic with machine, tape, and counsel. And, while those are but two of his masterworks (check out what he does to "Melt" and "Dark Corners," both from Bozzio Levin Stevens) the real stunner here is Steve Walsh's dark epic "Kansas," a piece that, in its new state, takes on the deepest meaning.
Various Artists/Drum Nation Vol. 1 ....CD $13.99

Magna Carta has joined forces with Modern Drummer Magazine to present some of the world's greatest contemporary drummers and has given them each the opportunity to showcase their extraordinary talents. Terry Bozzio (Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck), Bill Bruford (King Crimson, Yes), Simon Phillips (The Who, Toto) are just a few of the world-class drummers performing on "DRUM NATION." Some of the artists perform with their touring groups, some with session players. Others chose to play all the instruments themselves. But each of the exclusive performances on "DRUM NATION" is world class and can be appreciated by anyone who loves virtuoso musicianship. Also featured are Steve Smith and Zakir Hussain, Chad Wackerman, Stanton Moore, Josh Freese, Rod Morgenstein, Tim Alexander & Brain, Marco Minnemann, and Stephen Perkins & Brooks Wackerman.

World Class Drum Performances from Drummers who have worked with George Clinton, Frank Zappa, The Who, James Brown, Primus, A Perfect Circle, Sting, and many others. The first Drum Nation album (Volume One) emerged as a result of Pete Morticelli's vision. The head of Magna Carta had long observed that an unusual sense of community existed among drummersa rare breed, to be sure! What would happen if they were given free creative reign, license to submit music unfettered by commercial constraints? Thus was born Drum Nation - Volume One. Volume Two continues the tradition. This time, Pete has ventured into the label's vaults and retrieved some of the most stirring performances you've ever heardfrom indisputably the most influential drummers of our time including Mike Portnoy, Pat Mastelotto, Dennis Chambers, Terry Bozzio, Clyde Stubblefield, Virgil Donati, Tim Alexander, Keith Carlock, Rod Morgenstein, Simon Phillips, Josh Freese, Anton Fig and Stanton Moore.

Steve Walsh/Glossolalia ....CD $13.99

Steve Walsh of Kansas has put the kind of work into Glossolalia rarely seen since the elaborate progressive cathedrals of the 70's. But the sound is decidedly modern. Whals educating himself in digital techniques, Protools, mp3's, you name it, working up the whole record on hard disc, e-mailing files back and forth with king of the new progressive, Trent Garnder, and then assembling a crack band of old friends and new ones to breath life into these mature works. Along with Trent on keyboards, Billy Greer (bass) and Mike Slamer (guitar) are back from Steve's vastly under-rated Streets project, and one of rock's scariest new drum technicians, Australian Virgil Donati, last seen rewriting the percussive texts with Derek Sherinian and Planet X, is heard replaing and/or cooking alongside Steve's adeptly applied electronic rhythms.
Robert Walter/Super Heavy Organ ....CD $14.99

On Super Heavy Organ Robert Walter is in able company as he constructs what he calls 'soul jazz.' For one thing there's the rhythm section, culled from the finest of the New Orleans old and new guards - Johnny Vidacovich and Stanton Moore. Then we have Tim Green, James Singelton and Anthony Farrell, as competent as it gets on sax, bass and vocals. But they deliver more than competence here. It's more of a hardiness, a rollicking funk, done up in contemporary New Orleans style.
Robert Walter's 20th Congress/Giving Up the Ghost ....CD $13.99

On his new record, Giving Up the Ghost, Robert Walter has added a new talent to his recording lineup. Known for his work with such jazz/soul/funk giants as Mike Clark of Herbie Hancock's Headhunters, legendary James Brown and P-Funk sideman and songwriter, Fred Wesley, and George Porter of the Meters, this time out Walter enlisted another player for his latest album -- the studio. "I collect records. I'm into recordings," says Walter. "From doing home recordings, I started experimenting with different sounds, and I decided I wanted to do something more interesting than just record the band. On this album, I tried using the studio as an instrument. It's involved in the music and an important part of making this record what it is. I move things around, change elements. On some tracks, there's no soloing at all, and all of the solos are downplayed in favor of creating a mood, a sonic texture." Joined by Joe Russo and George Sluppick on drums; Greyboy Allstar Chris Stillwell and Black-Eyed Pea Mike Fratantuno on bass; Will Bernard (of TJ Kirk fame) on guitar; percussionist Chuck Prada, and long-time partner Cochemea Gastelum on alto sax and various woodwinds, Walter explores new territory, incorporating elements of electronic music and dub reggae into his traditional R&B and jazz roots, all powered by the flavor of his vintage Fender Rhodes and Hammond B-3 organ. The result is a new hybrid that's distinctly Robert Walter, which is to say, the sound combines just about every form of music into a driving, syncopated groove that will move fans of jazz, soul, blues, roots rock and, yes, those ever-in-motion jam band fanatics.
Andy West with Rama/Rama 1 ....CD $13.99

Bassist Andy West has been in and out of the Dixie Dregs; he's played with experimental guitarist Henry Kaiser's Crazy Backwards Alphabet; he's recorded with Steve Morse, Vinnie Moore, and Paul Barrère; he's a cofounder of Zazen, a new-age instrumental band that released over a dozen albums; he collaborated with Henry Kaiser, guitarist Mike Keneally, and drummer Prairie Prince to form the Mistakes, whose self-titled CD offered a level of improvisation rarely heard since the heyday of Charlie Parker; and he and former Zazen guitarist Joaquin Lievano recently got back together under the uncapitalized moniker fwap. And now, with the release of Rama, West is a solo artist too. Rama (named for the Arthur C. Clarke series of novels) features a stellar supporting cast including drummers Rod Morgenstein (Dixie Dregs), Jonathan Mover and Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater); guitarists Toshi Iseda and Mike Keneally (Frank Zappa, The Mistakes, Beer for Dolphins); keyboardists Jens Johansson, T Lavitz (Dixie Dregs) and Kit Watkins (Happy the Man, Camel). Mike Keneally who appears on every track also co-produced and co-mixed the album. "Progressive" should mean just that: Progress. Newness. Adventurousness and fearlessness. Andy West plays progressive music, no question, but he takes it where even the most open minded of us hesitate to go.
