As a teenager, Graham Brook like many of his contemporaries was well in tune with the burgeoning music scene of the 60's. Young Graham and his mates haunted the record stores, buying whatever new releases they could afford, enthusiastically tracking the birth of R&B based pop through it's metamorphosis to the psychedelic and progressive rock of the late 60's and early 70's.
With the advent of the 90's, things turned full circle, and the interest in 60's & 70's music was rekindled. In a tiny collector's shop in darkest Balham, Graham met Hugo Chavez, a Chilean who had recently emigrated to England with his young family, and was at the forefront of the thriving collectors scene, having links with Europe, the USA and Japan. Graham with his now finally attuned business sense, began to detect a gap in the market. This fact, along with meeting Hugo, was the catalyst which prompted Graham to take redundancy from his job after 14 years; and armed with a legacy left him by his father, pursue his dream of a life in the world of music. Together Graham and Hugo formed 'Background' in 1992, a massively successful venture, which re-issued rare material onto CD, and distributed it to avid collectors around the world.
By 1994, 'Background' was doing well and had given birth to two new specialist labels, 'Aftermath' and 'English Garden'. Hugo Chavez returned to Chile leaving Graham in sole charge of these now quite substantial babies! Again Graham's business sense was twitching. He was looking to the future, and ways to expand the company in readiness for the time when inevitably the rare titles would begin to dwindle. As luck would have it, Graham met up with John Simms the enigmatic lead guitarist from the legendary band 'Clear Blue Sky' (Vertigo). Graham was impressed with John's new material. He was also impressed with John's musical & business partner, namely his wife Maxine. Maxine's enthusiasm, organisational skills and visionary powers made her a natural progression in Graham's master plan. Maxine joined Graham at Hi-Note Music, and a new era in music publishing was born. The 'English Garden' label had fantastic success with the new folk rock band 'The Morrigan'- whose music complemented Graham's love affair with the styles in his back catalogue.
The next logical step was to form 'Headline', a new label featuring current artists producing the new music developing from the great influences of the past, and the chance to give new bands and artists a platform for their individual styles to be heard. All in all Headline Records offers a rich diversity of fresh talent and ideas set for a world market as new stars and new collectables for the connoisseurs of the future!
In the meantime, Hi-Note is constantly adding to the roster of albums on all four labels! They achieved a major coup recently with the remastering of Jade Warrior's first three albums along with the first time release of a Jade Warrior album recorded back in the 70's.

Formed in June 2006 in the Lake District, and launching their first album entitled Stolen Time in February 2008, Oceanfield are: Jane Barrett (vocals, whistles, backing vocals), Chris Holmes (guitars, bass, keyboards, mandolin, backing vocals) and Steve Hartley (drums and percussion). The origins of these early innovators go way back to their self-titled debut release on the celebrated 'Vertigo' label, in 1971, which is still available today, re-issued on CD. Since then, they have been featured on numerous compilation albums, plus the subsequent release of 'Destiny' in 1990, and latterly 'Cosmic Crusader' in 1996. In between this came other bands, and guitarist John Simms joined The Ginger Baker Group as lead guitarist and vocalist. However, due to the continued interest in Clear Blue Sky, the band has prepared two special releases. Now to celebrate their 30th year, Hi-Note Music presents two albums on Aftermath. These encompass their entire career, beginning with their never yet heard first recordings in 68-69 through to their all new album for 2001.

These were in fact the first ever recordings made by the band in 68-69. Astonishing! The duo of guitarist Tony Duhig and virtuoso flautist and woodwind player Jon Field were signed to Island records in 1974, following the recent break up of the four piece Jade Warrior (who recorded three albums for Vertigo records between 1970 and 1973). Island founder Chris Blackwell signed the duo upon the recommendation of Steve Winwood, declaring Jade Warrior to be "an ornament to my label." Blackwell gave Duhig and Field access to unlimited studio time to create four albums that were later hailed as instrumental masterpieces, all of which fused ethnic African and far eastern influences with superbly innovative rock guitar playing by Tony Duhig. "Way of the Sun" was perhaps the band's most fully realised work, drawing upon South American musical influences which blended effortlessly with western rock. Remastered from the original master tapes and feature extensive liner notes, deluxe slip case packaging and fully restored artwork.

Finally available are two albums from Jade Warrior's lost years following their departure from Island Records. Horizen is seeing its first ever release on CD! Even its original vinyl release was quite obsure and a major find for any lucky Jade Warrior fan who stumbled across a copy. Horizen is comparable to their Island releases and includes the work Images of Dune, composed for the soundtrack of the movie Dune. It seems Dino de Laurentis was a fan of the band and requested a submission from them for the film. Unfortunately for all concerned some unscrupulous worker in the producer's office kept him from receiving their tape.
At Peace is a totally different kind of Jade Warrior album exploring the more ambient side of the band's nature. Sadly it was to be Tony Duhig's last album as he passed away not long after. With these two CD's, it marks the first time that the entire Jade Warrior catalog has been available on CD!

Something old, yet something new from Jade Warrior! Eclipse and Fifth Element were recorded around 1973 by the original Jade Warrior lineup (Jon Field, Tony Duhig, and Glyn Havard). They were planned to be followups on the Vertigo label following their third album, Last Autumn's Dream. But Vertigo cancelled the band's contract before they were released. The set of tracks on Eclipse includes the three previously available only on the 'Reflections' collection, two available only on the U.S. and European versions of the Vertigo Records Suck It And See samplers, and two never before released. All performances on The Fifth Element CD are seeing their very first release. One composition, 'On the Mountain of Fruit,' eventually evolved to become part of Jade Warrior's first album for Island, the classic Floating World.
