One listen and you will know that Mike was a very attentive apprentice during his time in Frank Zappa's band. And like Frank, Mike pulls his influences from everywhere he can. I have never had a more difficult time selecting soundbites from albums than I did in pulling these from Mike's solo albums and that of his group, Beer for Dolphins. Because of all the radical diversity within, it seemed impossible to find a soundbite that would truly do any one of these albums justice while feeling representative of them as a whole. If you want a good representation of these incredible albums, my recommendation is to take all the soundbites and string them together as one. Keneally fans should also check out other projects in which he participated including Neil Sadler's Theory of Forms, Mullmuzzler's Keep It To Yourself and a tributes to Yes.
Mike Keneally/Sluggo! (Deluxe Edition) ....CD + double DVD $34.99
SLUGGO! DONE RIGHT! My 1997 album Sluggo! has been out of print forever, but it's finally coming back! It features a great deal of unreleased audio and video material, and a new 2013 stereo and surround mixes of the Sluggo! album. I've always felt the album is really good, but I've had reservations about the mix forever. It's a long story (told at length in the new liner notes in the reissue packaging), but the upshot is I'm finally completely happy with the sound of the album. Sixteen years after recording it, I finally feel like I've finished Sluggo! Disc one is a CD containing the new stereo mix of Sluggo! (done in 2012 and 2013 by Mike Harris and myself), plus two bonus tracks. "Craney" was recorded during the Sluggo! sessions, and originally released on Something With a Pulse, a benefit record for drummer Mark Craney. "Bob Dylan's Nose" was previously only available in a live version on the Soap Scum Remover VHS; it was originally intended to be part of Sluggo! This studio version of "Nose" was never completed, but it is a pretty scorching track recorded live in the studio by Bryan Beller, Joe Travers and myself. Disc two is a DVD-Audio disc with the complete album in: PCM 16/48 Stereo, DTS 24/48 5.1 Digital Surround, MLP 24/96 Lossless Stereo, MLP 24/96 Lossless 5.1 Surround. Disc Three is a standard DVD containing a plethora of material, including over two hours of live and studio video footage, the original 1997 Sluggo! CD mix, more bonus tracks, and additional ephemera.
Mike Keneally/You Must Be This Tall ....CD $16.99
In a Nutshell - the 24th album from fearless experimental rock innovator Mike Keneally (known for his work with Frank Zappa, Joe Satriani, Dethklok and many others) is You Must Be This Tall. Featuring 12 largely instrumental pieces, the album is a wildly careening ride through multiple moods, unified by Mike's virtuoso turns on guitar and keyboard, and his widely respected compositional acumen. Many songs feature Mike on all instruments, but expert assistance also comes from Marco Minnemann, Bryan Beller, Joe Travers, Rick Musallam, Missy Andersen and XTC's Andy Partridge (Mike's co-songwriter on 2012's massively acclaimed Wing Beat Fantastic). Moods range from madcap humor to deep introspection, all captured in truly sumptuous audio quality - this is an album that rewards dedicated attention with a good set of headphones. You Must Be This Tall is a dream come true for fans of adventurous music made with heart and wit.
Mike Keneally/Wing Beat Elastic: Remixes Demos & Unheard Music ....CD $16.99
Mike Keneally on Wing Beat Elastic: We'd originally thought that Wing Beat Elastic might be a download-only collection, a low-profile side dish to Wing Beat Fantastic, but after arriving at the song sequence and listening to it a lot, we came to love it and wanted to give it a full CD release treatment. We still love making physical products and I think we always will. Atticus Wolrab has created a beautiful digipak design that accurately reflects, in its color and mood, how this album relates to Wing Beat Fantastic and fits into the WBF universe. I think that the 53-minute Wing Beat Elastic: Remixes, Demos & Unheard Music is a beautiful listen, and seems to work equally well in headphones and in cars, and in its full glory on elaborate home stereo systems (some people still have those, yeah?). We hope that, if you enjoyed Wing Beat Fantastic, you'll also enjoy this probe into the layers of that album's songs, be interested to hear some of the demos I did with Andy Partridge, and appreciate the chance to hear some unreleased music from the sessions as well. We very happily present Wing Beat Elastic!
Mike Keneally/Wing Beat Fantastic ....CD $16.99
This magical new album from composer/producer/multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Mike
Keneally is the highly anticipated result of a songwriting union between the famed rock
experimentalist and legendary XTC tunesmith Andy Partridge. Their collaboration
produced eight new songs, combining Partridge's innate sense of angular pop melody and
beautifully intelligent poeticism with Keneally's experimental bent and surrealist
tendencies. For Partridge fanatics, the album will be a trove of rare new material from a
songwriter who's released precious little new work over the past decade. For Keneally
enthusiasts, Wing Beat Fantastic represents his most melodic and pop-oriented release
ever, while still maintaining the rich, detail-studded arrangements, love of sonic
adventurism and superb musicianship for which he is renowned. More than any other Keneally
album, Wing Beat Fantastic has an emotional resonance that engages the heart as adeptly as
it does the mind.
A fairly breathtaking range of styles is presented, from the psychedelic pop sweep of the title song to the uptempo layered rock of "You Kill Me," a scathing look of modern hypocrisy in its many forms. "I'm Raining Here, Inside" kicks off the album with a ferociously infectious groove, indelible vocal melody and rippling guitars and keyboards. "That's Why I Have No Name" is a mid-tempo, brooding meditation with a driving piano and all manner of mind-bending effects gently whizzing throughout. "Your House" is an affecting ballad of unrequited love, almost shockingly accessible coming from an artist with Keneally's Zappa-related pedigree. "Bobeau" dances along on the infectious groove of Marco Minnemann's drums like the old-fashioned Steely Dan groove of everyone's dreams with an embarrassingly rich tapestry of keys, guitars, trombones and voices layered over the top.

Mike Keneally Band/Bakin' @ the Potato! ....CD + DVD $25.99
Five years after the Mike Keneally Band's Guitar Therapy Live triumph at LA's intimate Baked Potato club, a most worthy sequel is born. This time, Mike raises the stakes by adding guitarist Griff Peters to the mix, allowing the quintet to rise to new heights of musical power, diversity and subtlety. Live favorites are mixed delectably with seldom-played gems from Mike's catalogue to create a truly astonishing DVD and CD set. The DVD of the entire September 15, 2010 concert features stereo audio, DTS 5.1 Surround and Dolby 5.1 Surround, and the CD comes in just seconds short of the maximum possible 80 minutes. Mike Keneally Band is Mike Keneally: guitar, keyboard and vocals; Bryan Beller: bass and vocals; Rick Musallam: guitar and vocals; Griff Peters: Guitar; and Joe Travers: drums and vocals. (DVD includes bonus commentary tracks featuring all band members.)
Mike Keneally & Marco Minnemann/Evidence of Humanity ....CD + DVD $21.99
And! We are nearing completion of the video-editing phase on the DVD which will accompany the new CD Evidence of Humanity, by me and Marco Minnemann. Evidence of Humanity is my entry in the Marco Minnemann Normalizer 2 series, in which a variety of artists create an album's worth of music to accompany the same 51-minute improvised drum solo. Already released have been albums by John Czajkowski, Trey Gunn, Kerry Chicoine, Alex Machacek and Marco's own take on it. All completely different albums, which all use the same drum track in wildly divergent ways. Now, a bit later than I'd expected to finish it, here comes my version... ...and since it took a while for me to finish, and it's been two years already since the music on Disc 1 (the CD) was recorded, we decided a more current collaboration would round out the package nicely. We videotaped a 54-minute live duo improv that Marco and I did a few weeks ago (and also videotaped a bass overdub I did a few days later), and this additional album-length musical performance appears on Disc 2 (the DVD), Elements Of A Manatee. The DVD also features interview footage with Marco and me talking about the making of Evidence of Humanity, about the entire Normalizer 2 concept, and an oodle of additional topics, conducted in the car on the way to the album cover photo shoot at the Salton Sea.
Mike Keneally/Scambot 1 ....CD $15.99
Calling the first volume of Mike Keneally's Scambot trilogy "ambitious" might be understating things a bit. For five years Mike held it close to his heart as his main project, employing nine engineers and many musicians at six studios. "We devoted intense energy to every second of the album," says Mike. "There is a plot, and a bunch of characters. The CD booklet contains a very long story I wrote which lays out all of the action. Musically speaking, it's about two-thirds instrumental. It encompasses a little bit of straightforward-ish rock and pop, a lot of rigorous composition and arrangement, some obsessively intricate vocal and instrumental harmonies, some improvisation which has been orchestrated, some digitally-manipulated musique concrete, some purely uncategorizable stuff and, I think, some of the most interesting melodies I've come up with. It is a peculiar album but I think very satisfying as a journey, and emotionally it hits a lot of different moods." And here's another clue for you all: Scambot 1, Mike adds, is "dedicated to anyone who still listens to entire albums with their headphones on."
Mike Keneally/Scambot 1 (Special Edition) ....double CD $29.99
The Scambot 1 Special Edition includes the complete Scambot 1 CD, plus a second 53-minute CD crafted by Mike entitled Songs & Stories Inspired by Scambot 1, all packaged in an attractive Atticus Wolrab-designed slipcover made of genuine cardboard. This Special Edition is made even more special because Mike is individually numbering and signing the first 3000 copies! Here's what Mike has to say about Songs & Stories Inspired by Scambot 1: "This is a very uncompromising album, with a lot of guitar improvisation, demanding sonorities, alien vocal textures, truly insane song structure and many crucial pieces of the Scambot plot continuity. Plus a very entertaining credit sequence. If you are intrigued by the conceptual world of Scambot, it's heavily advisable to hear both albums." The great majority of the music on Songs & Stories Inspired by Scambot 1 is unique to it; three of the pieces are remixes of songs from Scambot 1, plus one demo.
Mike Keneally/Wine And Pickles ....CD $16.99
Mike describes Wine And Pickles as "the album I didnt know I was making over the last ten years." Lovingly assembled from a wide array of archived sources, W&P serves as a surprisingly cohesive alternative history of Keneally music. Notable among the 21 gems are the legendary original version of "Backwards Deb;" "4S," a piece written for Holland's acclaimed Metropole Orchestra; "Inhale," a gorgeously melodic collaboration with Lyle Workman; and "The Endings Of Things," a stark, confessional performance from 2000's Dancing sessions. The CD contains an eight-page booklet with Mike's original artwork, pithy personal notes about each song, and lyrics.

Bryan Beller/View ....CD $15.99
Long known as a uniquely talented yet tasteful hired gun bassist for the
more adventurous rock guitarists of recent times (Mike Keneally, Steve Vai, Dweezil Zappa,
Wayne Kramer), Bryan Beller ventures out on his own with his debut solo album, View, on
his own Onion Boy Records label. Those familiar with his main body of work - nine
years, five albums and countless tours with former Frank Zappa guitarist Mike Keneally -
are well aware of his ability to navigate the complex, sometimes impossibly dense forms
and styles present in Keneally's work
all with the polish, simplicity and
accessibility one might expect from a pop bassline. Both a repeat feature subject and
three-year columnist for Bass Player Magazine, Beller has long drawn the attention of
music fans with a discriminating taste for high-caliber playing.
But far from aspiring to bass heroism, Beller instead builds a carefully crafted emotional tapestry of interweaving themes and styles a true album in the old-fashioned sense. Drawing on influences as disparate as John Scofield and Rage Against The Machine, Michael Landau and Pink Floyd, Nine Inch Nails and his mentor, Mike Keneally, the resulting body of work runs the gamut from hardcore jazz/rock to vocal pop to world beat while somehow staying thematically intact, all the while displaying equal parts density and sensitivity, melody and dissonance, tranquility and furious release. Musicians include guitarists Mike Keneally, Rick Musallam (Ben Taylor Band), Griff Peters and Yogi; drummers Toss Panos (Toy Matinee, Steve Vai) and Joe Travers (Dweezil Zappa, Lisa Loeb).
Mike Keneally/Wooden Smoke ....CD $15.99
Wooden Smoke is Mike Keneally's brand new solo album. It's primarily acoustic. It's not your typical "acoustic album" though there's a lot of interesting sounds happening, generated in some fairly unorthodox ways, which will make more sense after you've heard it. There are elaborate vocal arrangements on a number of songs, but the album is about half instrumental. The music is a little hard to describe. It's mysterious, but intimate and inviting. It has a kind of plot, but you can't figure it out. It's a solo Keneally album rather than a BFD release, although it is graced by the appearances of several band members (Rick, Tricia and Bryan) on a few of the songs. Mike plays most of the instruments himself but multi-instrumentalist Marcelo Radulovich and percussionist Nathan Hubbard, members of the Trummerflora Collective, were crucial collaborators on several of the songs. Also making important contributions were saxophonist Lee Elderton, drummer Chris G and Matt Resnicoff, who sang on three tracks and provided intense amounts of creative assistance in the studio.
Mike Keneally & Beer for Dolphins/Dancing ....CD $15.99
Sometimes it seems that actual human feeling, conveyed through passionate musicianship and songwriting, is all but absent in popular music nowadays. Mike Keneally is thrilled to prove otherwise with his eighth album, "Dancing." Mike has invited Beer For Dolphins, his masterful eight-piece band, into the studio to lay down nearly 80 minutes of the most gleefully adventurous, yet heartfelt, Keneally music ever. This album is truly a feast for the ears. While last year's acclaimed Keneally solo release "Nonkertompf" was an instrumental album, "Dancing" is mainly based around songs with vocals. Keneally (known by many as a guitarist from his work with Frank Zappa and Steve Vai) here delivers highly emotional vocal performances which may come as a surprise to a lot of people. The style of the album's 20 tracks veers from upbeat pop to free-form improv, introspective balladry to ferocious rock raveups, Beach Boys and Bacharach sugariness to utter uncategorizability and beyond. Yet it all hangs together, thanks to the powerful and freewheeling sound of Beer For Dolphins, and the personal quality of Keneally's composing. A genuinely individual rock songwriter, Mike has developed a whole lot of heart and confidence through the eight years of his solo recording career. A music-lover in the extreme, he makes music which embraces all other music-lovers and listeners the world over are gratefully embracing it in return.
Mike Keneally/Nonkertompf ....CD $15.99
Mike's seventh album, Nonkertompf, is an instrumental effort featuring Keneally playing everything, including guitars, keyboards, drums, sax, a stool and about a dozen other devices. It's a 74-minute stream-of-consciousness flight-of-fancy that takes the listener on an unparallelled sonic journey. Countless styles and moods are explored and seamlessly sewn together, always with extraordinary musical precision, rich orchestrational sense and a very big heart. After two successful U.S tours of his own in 1998, Keneally is set to embark on a worldwide tour with Steve Vai, during which he'll be aggressively promoting Nonkertompf on each stop of the journey. Nonkertompf is Mike's very first release on his own brand new label, Exowax!
