The year 2003 saw the inception of Eclectic Discs, the home of good music and the label of choice for discerning music lovers throughout the world. Eclectic's releases quickly became regarded as the watchword for quality packaging and superb remastering in the world of both catalogue reissues and frontline releases by classic artists, with over fifty individual titles released by the label.

Now, the people who brought you Eclectic Discs bring you Esoteric Recordings, a new identity, but still a home for good music with the emphasis on quality packaged and remastered catalogue reissues and inspiring new works from artists with a history and heritage. Esoteric is an exciting part of a new chapter for label manager Mark Powell that began with Eclectic Discs, and continues as part of the Cherry Red group of labels. Mark said "Cherry Red Records is the oldest independent record label in Britain, born of the glory days of the UK indie music scene of the late 1970's. Whilst their compatriots have either gone by the wayside or have become part of multi-national corporations, Cherry Red have always stayed true to their ideals. It's an exciting prospect to establish Esoteric Recordings within the company and to be part of their continuing story. I'm looking forward immensely to working with Ian McNay, Adam Velasco and all at Cherry Red to develop Esoteric into an identity to be proud of."

The first releases on Esoteric will appear in September 2007 and will feature titles by Rare Bird, Egg, Gong leader Daevid Allen, Paladin, Marsupilami, Big Sleep and a 2CD anthology by British progressive jazz rock outfit Jonesy. In addition the label will be releasing frontline products in the form of the first ever DVD and a new live album recorded by John Lees' Barclay James Harvest at Shepherd's Bush Empire, London in November 2006.

After guesting on the acclaimed "MAGIC SHOEMAKER" album by FIRE in 1970 he signed to PYE Records as a solo artist, recording the classic "PAUL BRETT SAGE" the same year. Following the acclaim of the album, BRETT formed the band SAGE and recorded the first of two albums for PYE's progressive imprint, DAWN, "Jubilation Foundry" in 1971. More rock-based in focus, the album tapped into the new Progressive Rock movement. 1972's "SCHIZOPHRENIA" continued in this direction and gained the biggest exposure for BRETT's band. The classic "Custom Angel Man" was a highlight of the record and saw the group appear on THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST. Remastered from the original master tapes, these Esoteric Recordings reissues make the entire PAUL BRETT SAGE catalogue available on CD in the UK for the first time.

The album was originally recorded August 1984 in Computer Music Studio, London for Flicknife records and was inspired by the 1984 miners' strike and the effect it had on miners, their families and British politics. One of the most intelligent songwriters in the progressive-rock field, displayed in both his recorded and published work an informed and compassionate concern for the world around him, all of which is reflected in "Freq," a concept album dealing with automation in the workplace, industrial decline, unemployment, and the overall mechanization of man. Jimmy Campbell/Son of Anastasia ....import CD $19.99

Originally released in 1969, "Son of Anastasia" was the debut album by one of Liverpool's finest musicians, JIMMY CAMPBELL. Previously a member of The Kirkby's and 23rd Turnoff (who recorded Campbell's "Michaelangelo" as a single for Deram Records), Campbell's solo career began with this album (produced by John Cameron who had earlier worked with Donovan) which featured material both of aching beauty and melancholia such as the excellent "On a Monday" and his reworking of "Michaelangelo." As with the music of BILL FAY (another songwriter whose work enjoyed a re-evaluation in recent times), CAMPBELL's work is ripe for rediscovery. Recently hailed by MOJO magazine as a "buried treasure," this remastered CD release of "Son of Anastasia" is long overdue as tribute to the work of JIMMY CAMPBELL who sadly passed away in 2007.

They made some fascinating records." Now, for the first time, ESOTERIC gathers all of Jonesy's recorded output for Dawn Records and gathers it on this deluxe 2CD set, with all tracks bein 24-bit remastered from the original master tapes. Like fellow future Charisma stable mates Van Der Graaf Generator, Rare Bird was formed around the principle of keyboard dominated progressive rock which eschewed the use of guitars. In December 1969 their eponymous debut album was released to great critical acclaim, (also becoming a US Billboard chart hit) and was followed in January 1970 by the release of "Sympathy" b/w "Devil's High Concern". The single reached the UK Top 30 and was a subsequent major hit throughout Europe.  This classic album has been 24 bit remastered for this release and includes the bonus tracks Devil's High Concern and Sympathy (mono single version).

Remastered from the original master tapes!  ESOTERIC RECORDINGS follow on from the highly successful reissues of RARE BIRD's first two albums in 2007 with this classic rock album from 1973, their second release for POLYDOR. Best known for their hit single "SYMPATHY," by the time of this album Rare Bird had changed line ups, though still retained their "progressive" style. "SOMEBODY'S WATCHING" features guest musicians Nic Potter (of VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR) and former FAMILY and future KING CRIMSON member JOHN WETTON and includes their classic interpretation of Ennio Morricone's theme to "A Fistful of Dollars." This ESOTERIC reissue also features both sides of their 1973 single "Virginia" as bonus tracks. "BORN AGAIN" was RARE BIRD's final album and included their classic "Diamonds". This ESOTERIC reissue is a companion CD release to their 1973 album "SOMEBODY'S WATCHING" and also features both sides of their final 1975 single "Don't Be Afraid" as bonus tracks.

Room/Pre-Flight ....import CD $18.99

24-bit remastered from the original master tapes!  Recorded at the Decca studios in the summer of 1970, Room's "Pre Flight" was an ambitious blend of rock, blues, jazz and classical influences. The album was critically well received but unfortunately like many strong releases of this genre at the time on the classic DERAM label, did not achieve the hoped for breakthrough to greater commercial success. Room's only recorded work, the album has been remastered from the original analogue tapes and is now presented in this definitive edition from ESOTERIC RECORDINGS.

Samurai/Samurai ....import CD $18.99

Classic progressive rock album - now 24-bit remastered from the original master tapes!   "Samurai" is truly a lost classic of the Progressive era. Released on the short lived Greenwich Gramophone label in 1972, the album was influenced by the experiments of groups such as KING CRIMSON, GENTLE GIANT et al, but was more than a mere clone of these bands. Evolving from the equally excellent band WEB (whose album "I Spider" is a classic of the genre), the musicianship on the album was excellent and Keyboard player DAVE LAWSON's compositions were groundbreaking and memorable. Sadly the group disbanded shortly after the release of the record resulting in limited sales. However, the influence of the album was not lost as both DAVE LAWSON and TONY REEVES soon joined DAVE GREENSLADE to form the group GREENSLADE, effectively taking up the musical mantle laid down by SAMURAI. This Esoteric reissue features a booklet with previously unseen photographs and an interview with DAVE LAWSON.

Satisfaction/Satisfaction ....import CD $19.99

Satisfaction/Satisfaction ....import CD $19.99

Satisfaction was a short lived jazz influenced progressive outfit formed by trumpet and horn player Mike Cotton, a veteran of the early '60's British R&B boom. The group also included John Beecham (trombone), Derek Griffiths (guitar, vocals), Bernie Higginson (drums, vocals), Lem Lubin (saxophone) and Nick Newell (saxophone). John Beecham had previously been in the Mike Cotton Sound, whilst Griffiths had been a member of the highly regarded Artwoods with Keef Hartley and Jon Lord. By the late 1960's jazz was crashing headlong into the world of rock and Mike Cotton assembled a group of like minded musicians to explore the musical possibilities in this area. Signing to Decca in 1971, the group worked with producer David Hitchcock on the eponymous album. This ESOTERIC RECORDINGS reissue marks the album's debut on CD.  First ever release for this classic album from 1970 - remastered from the original tapes.  Inclues four bonus tracks previously unreleased on CD and an extensive booklet with unseen photos and notes.

JAN has delivered a well crafted album which is certain to appeal to fans of CARAVAN, CAMEL and followers of the so-called CANTERBURY sound.

The debut studio album by former members of the classic line-ups of Hawkwind - Nik Turner, Terry Ollis, Dave Anderson, Thomas Crimble and Mick Slattery!  A band formed by former founder members of HAWKWIND, the group SPACE RITUAL are true exponents of Space Rock, performing sell-out concerts drawing on "Classic" Hawkwind repertoire written by Nik Turner, Dave Anderson and Terry Ollis. Now SPACE RITUAL comes alive in the 21st Century with a stunning new studio album of original material that takes the ground breaking music of these ex-Hawkwind members into a new dimension that is both contemporary but still aware of its heritage and roots. Also featuring written poems by Sci-fi author Michael Moorcock, "Otherworld" has been described as "more Hawkwind than Hawkwind" by one commentator, but SPACE RITUAL are more than that. They are a band in their own right, with their own style and future. Catch them on tour in the UK in October and on their new album, "Otherworld" now!

William R. Strickland/...Is Only the Name ....import CD $19.99

Released in both the UK and USA on Decca's DERAM label in 1969, most music observers became aware of WILLIAM R STRICKLAND by his inclusion on the classic 1969 sampler album "WOWIE ZOWIE - THE WORLD OF PROGRESSIVE MUSIC." Strickland's album was an introspective and dark work that utilized avant garde synthesiser sounds on "Computer Lover" and orchestrated arrangements to make for an interesting fusion of poetry, folk music and the experimental. Once describing himself as "a cross between Willie Nelson and Pink Floyd," an American newspaper once referred to him as "...a kinky cross between Mark Twain and Lenny Bruce." An album to appeal to fans of the strange, this Esoteric Recordings release has been remastered from the original master tapes and marks the albums' first appearance on CD.

STUD were formed in 1970 by RICHARD McCRACKEN and JOHN WILSON (from the recently disbanded band TASTE who featured RORY GALLAGHER) and JIM CREGAN (of BLOSSOM TOES and later in FAMILY). The album they recorded for Decca's DERAM label was an amalgam of rock and jazz and was an outstanding "progressive" album of its time. The sessions also featured guest appearances by POLI PALMER (of FAMILY) and JOHN WEIDER (ex-ERIC BURDON & THE ANIMALS and FAMILY).  Although Stud never achieved the acclaim they deserved, their debut album remains highly sought after by aficionados of Progressive Rock. ESOTERIC RECORDINGS are pleased to add this first ever CD release of "Stud" to their catalogue in April 2008.  Remastered from the original master tapes.

First ever UK CD release for these four classic albums from the masters of Dutch prog rock, Supersisters, remastered from the original tapes.  Featured in the soundtrack of the film "Control" about Joy Division, SUPERSISTER were one of the most original groups to emerge in Holland in the late 1960's. Inspired by the work of SOFT MACHINE and CARAVAN, the group recorded a quartet of master works. In 1971 they signed to JOHN PEEL's Dandelion label and remained a favourite of his. Eccentric, accomplished and unique, SUPERSISTER's albums are a joy to any fan of original music. ESOTERIC RECORDINGS are pleased to reissue their classic first four albums with additional bonus tracks.   Present to Nancy includes four bonus tracks comprising all sides of their first two singles.  To the Highest Bidder features four additional bonus tracks comprising single cuts from 1971.  Pudding en Gisteren (Pudding and Yesterday) features two bonus tracks - Dead Dog (previously unreleased on CD) and a live version of Wow.   Iskander, their final studio offering, was recorded in England and is akin to later SOFT MACHINE in approach, although still original in construction and includes three bonus tracks.  All four include fully restored artwork. Chris Wood/Vulcan ....CD $19.99

Esoteric Recordings are proud to announce the release of the album "Vulcan" by the late CHRIS WOOD, founder member of the legendary TRAFFIC and flautist and saxophonist extraordinaire. Recorded just after the demise of TRAFFIC in 1974, "Vulcan" was begun for Island records but shelved in 1978. The sessions featured contributions from STEVE WINWOOD and members of THE WAILERS, along with a live recording of TRAFFIC performing the title track in 1974, but due to a change in musical fashion with the advent of Punk, the album failed to see the light of day. Island boss Chris Blackwell returned the tapes to Chris Wood in the late 1970's. Following Chris' untimely death in 1983 the tapes were passed on to his sister, Stephanie. Now, 25 years later, and after three years of research and preparation, Esoteric have pieced together the sessions in co-operation with Stephanie Wood to bring you "Vulcan."

The album's debut on CD is Sure to attract the attention of the legions of collectors of both Progressive rock and the Deram label.

Darryl Way was founder member of the legendary CURVED AIR, a group that brought Way's strident electric violin playing to the fore on a string of hit albums. In 1973, Way formed WOLF, a progressive outfit featuring guitarist John Etheridge, bassist Dek Messecar (later in CARAVAN) and drummer Ian Mosley (now in MARILLION). The music was a heady mixture of styles and secured the band a contract with Decca's DERAM label. "Canis Lupus" was the group's debut, produced by KING CRIMSON member Ian McDonald (who also guested on the record).  The Esoteric edition of Canis Lupus features two bonus tracks.  "Saturation Point" was the group's second album and followed on from their innovative "Canis Lupus" LP and includes three bonus tracks. "Night Music" was the final album in the WOLF trilogy and perhaps the finest. With the band augmented by former "IF" vocalist John Hodgkinson, the album is a lost classic of 70's rock. This first ever UK CD reissues of these albums are remastered from the original tapes and includes expanded artwork and is released to coincide with CURVED AIR's reformation and appearance at the ISLE OF WIGHT festival in June 2008.

First released in 1968, the record has been described as having "a tint of 60's psychedelia with jazz-influences and a few early progressive tendencies." Fronted by American vocalist John L. Watson, the album receives its first CD release on Esoteric.

Originally released by Polydor Records in 1970, the album was influenced by the experiments of groups such as KING CRIMSON, GENTLE GIANT et al, but was more than a mere clone of these bands. The group evolved from an excellent blues influenced band who released three albums for Deram, who then recruited keyboard player and writer DAVE LAWSON and recorded their final album. The musicianship on the album was excellent and keyboard player DAVE LAWSON's compositions were groundbreaking and memorable. The group soon evolved into SAMURAI. The Web/Theraphosa Blondi ....import CD $18.99

THE WEB are perhaps best known for their Progressive rock classic "I SPIDER," an album of innovation that continues to draw comparisons with the work of VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR at that time. THE WEB began life as a jazz and soul influenced outfit, fronted by singer JOHN L. WATSON, enjoying Top Ten hit singles throughout Europe. By the time of THERAPHOSA BLONDI the band underwent a metamorphosis, with their music taking on more Jazz and Progressive influences, resulting in an excellent album that is rightly seen as a precursor to both the album "I SPIDER" and the band's evolution into the group SAMURAI. Remastered by DAVE LAWSON, (who joined the band soon after the release of the album) from the original master tapes, this reissue of THERAPHOSA BLONDI features two unreleased bonus tracks and a highly entertaining essay by Web's JOHN EATON.

Forming in 1972 the band brought together CREAM bassist, vocalist and writer JACK BRUCE with LESLIE WEST and CORKY LAING from the American band MOUNTAIN. Together WBL recorded three albums, all of which demonstrated the group's power and dexterity. Following the release of their debut, "Why Doncha?" for CBS records in Europe, the band moved to RSO Records to record their last studio album, 'Whatever Turns You On,' which featured such classics as "Scotch Krotch." Their powerful live album, 'Live n' Kickin'' captures WBL at their peak and includes stunning versions of "Play With Fire," Cream's "Politician" and "Powerhouse Sod."  Alas, the band only lasted some eighteen months before breaking apart. These ESOTERIC releases, remastered from the original tapes, follows on the heels of the label's critically acclaimed 6 CD set JACK BRUCE retrospective "Can You Follow?" and is indeed a welcome one for all fans of classic rock.
