Now, the people who brought you Eclectic Discs bring you Esoteric Recordings, a new identity, but still a home for good music with the emphasis on quality packaged and remastered catalogue reissues and inspiring new works from artists with a history and heritage. Esoteric is an exciting part of a new chapter for label manager Mark Powell that began with Eclectic Discs, and continues as part of the Cherry Red group of labels. Mark said "Cherry Red Records is the oldest independent record label in Britain, born of the glory days of the UK indie music scene of the late 1970's. Whilst their compatriots have either gone by the wayside or have become part of multi-national corporations, Cherry Red have always stayed true to their ideals. It's an exciting prospect to establish Esoteric Recordings within the company and to be part of their continuing story. I'm looking forward immensely to working with Ian McNay, Adam Velasco and all at Cherry Red to develop Esoteric into an identity to be proud of."

The first releases on Esoteric will appear in September 2007 and will feature titles by Rare Bird, Egg, Gong leader Daevid Allen, Paladin, Marsupilami, Big Sleep and a 2CD anthology by British progressive jazz rock outfit Jonesy. In addition the label will be releasing frontline products in the form of the first ever DVD and a new live album recorded by John Lees' Barclay James Harvest at Shepherd's Bush Empire, London in November 2006.

Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the first ever release of "Harrodian Event #1." Recorded in January 1972, this rare recording features a unique event where seven gifted progressive musicians came together to record a session of unique experimental music. Keyboard player J. Peter Robinson (a member of Quatermass, later in Brand X), John Gustafson (bass) had also been in Quatermass and would go on to play with Steve Hackett, Ian Gillan and Roxy Music), Martyn Ford had been an arranger for Barclay James Harvest before working with the major names in rock, Paul Buckmaster had worked with David Bowie, Third Ear Band and many more, whilst Trevor Morais would find fame in Quantum Jump and working with the Penguin Cafe Orchestra.  The music of the Harrodian Event touches on the styles later developed by artists such as Henry Cow or even Frank Zappa. It is experimental, unique and rewarding.  This Esoteric Recordings release has been remastered by J. Peter Robinson, who also wrote the essay in the accompanying illustrated booklet.

Bill Nelson's Orchestra Arcana/Iconography ....import CD $21.99

Esoteric Recordings imprint Cocteau Discs, the home of Bill Nelson's catalogue between 1971 and 2001, continues their series of on-going releases with a newly remastered edition of the album, "Iconography."  The album was issued in 1986 credited to Orchestra Arcana, due to the contractual situation Bill found himself in with CBS Records. The music within comprises recordings made at Bill's Echo Observatory home studio in 1984 and 1985.  Bill Nelson reflected on the album thus; "Whilst these recordings are 'lo fi' in nature, I have always been fond of them. These recordings serve as a reminder that expensive technology isn't always the key to creativity."   "Iconography" is a fine album that remains fascinating and engaging nearly three decades later.  The Cocteau Discs edition fully restores the original album artwork and features a new note by Bill Nelson. It also features two bonus tracks from the "Sex Psyche Etc." EP released in 1985.

Pete Brown & Phil Ryan/Ardours of the Lost Rake + Coals to Jerusalem ....import double CD $25.99

Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of a newly remastered two CD set of the albums "Ardours of the Lost Rake" and "Coals to Jerusalem" by Pete Brown & Phil Ryan.  Pete Brown is perhaps best known for being lyricist on the classic songs co-written with Jack Bruce for both Cream and Jack's solo albums. In addition Pete is a respected performer in his own right, having performed with the band's Battered Ornaments and Piblokto! in the '70s and fronting his own band, The Interocetors. Phil Ryan has had a respected career as keyboard player for legendary bands such as Eyes of Blue, Man and Neutrons, along with a spell as keyboard player in Piblokto! with Pete Brown. Both albums in this set were originally released in 1991 and 1993 respectively and feature fine material. Unavailable for many years, this set has been newly remastered and features four previously unreleased bonus tracks.  The set also features an illustrated booklet with new essay written by Pete Brown.

Bob Downes/Deep Down Heavy ....import CD $21.99

Esoteric Recordings are proud to announce the first official release of the classic 1970 album by Bob Downes "Deep Down Heavy." Celebrated jazz saxophonist and flautist Bob Downes' album first appeared on EMI's budget MFP label, arguably the only progressive jazz album ever issued by the label. The work was a collaboration with lyricist Robert Cockburn and was an outstanding eccentric example of jazz rock with progressive and even psychedelic influences. The music and songs featured contributions from the leading lights of British jazz rock such as Chris Spedding, Ray Russell and Alan Rushton, interspersed with poetry by Robert Cockburn (recorded on location on London buses and Underground trains).  The jazz groove of the music was present on tracks such as "Walking On," "Don't Let Tomorrow Get You Down" and "Poplar Cheam," leading the album to be sampled three decades later by DJs and Mixers.   Remastered from the original master tapes, this Esoteric Recordings reissue is long overdue. The time is right to rediscover the open music of "Deep Down Heavy," one of THE lost treasures of the progressive and psychedelic era.

Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of a newly remastered anthology featuring the best of the recorded output by the legendary Danish band Burnin' Red Ivanhoe, drawn from the recordings made for Sonet Records between 1969 and 1974.   Burnin' Red Ivanhoe are legends of the Danish progressive rock scene of the late '60s / early '70s. Formed in Copenhagen in 1967, the band initially featured the talents of Karsten Vogel (saxophones), Steen Claesson (guitar, vocals), Steen Lange (bass) and Bo Thrige Andersen (drums). Signing to Sonet Records in Denmark in December 1969, the band issued their first album "M 144" in 1969. Over the next few years the band's line-up varied, but the string of albums such as "Burnin' Red Ivanhoe," "WWW," "Miley Smile / Stage Recall" and "Right On" released between 1969 and 1974 gained many admirers throughout the world, including John Peel (who signed the band to his Dandelion label). Burnin' Red Ivanhoe's unique fusion of jazz, rock and the avant garde was as imaginative as anything emerging from the embryonic German rock scene of the time and remains impressive forty years later.  This anthology has been newly remastered from the original master tapes and features an illustrated booklet with new essay.

Atomhenge, the home of Hawkwind's catalogue from 1975 - 1997, are pleased to announce the long awaited release of a definitive edition of the classic 1975 album "Warrior on the Edge of Time." Recorded in 1975, the album is a ground-breaking classic of Hawkwind's career. Featuring a line-up of Dave Brock, Nik Turner, Lemmy, Simon House, Simon King and Alan Powell, the album is arguably one of the finest rock albums of the mid-1970s. This Atomhenge edition marks the first time that the original analogue stereo master tapes have been used for a remastered edition. Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of a newly remastered edition of the 1969 album by the legendary proto-progressive American rock group, Vanilla Fudge.  Long Island's Vanilla Fudge formed in 1966 when vocalist and organist Mark Stein, bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice came together to form one of the most influential rock trios of the 1960s. Initially inspired by The Rascals' organ dominated rock, Vanilla Fudge signed to Atlantic Records releasing their self-titled debut album in August 1967. Famous for their extended interpretations of classic material such as "You Keep Me Hanging On" and "Eleanor Rigby," by 1969 the band had influenced emerging bands such as Uriah Heep, Yes and Deep Purple, but had tired of the touring and recording treadmill.  "Rock and Roll" would be the band's final album of their initial formation. When Lindisfarne disbanded he appeared in the BBC TV production "Squire," which in turn would influence his second solo album, "Squire," recorded in December 1974 and January 1975 at Morgan studios in London.  A diverse album, "Squire" is a unique album in Alan Hull's discography and features appearances by Lindisfarne members Ray Jackson and Ray Laidlaw along with guest guitarists Micky Moody and Albert Lee.  This Esoteric Recordings release has been newly remastered from the original master tapes and includes two bonus tracks, an illustrated booklet and a new essay.

Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of a newly remastered edition of the highly collectable 1971 self-titled album by Ginjouse.  Hailing from Newcastle Upon Tyne, Ginhouse were a short lived progressive rock trio featuring Geoff Charkey (lead guitar & vocals), Stewart Burlinson (bass guitar & vocals) and Dave Whittaker (drums).  This power trio played a highly imaginative and powerful form of rock, coming to the attention of B&C Records in 1970. The band recorded their only album at Abbey Road studios with producer Anders Henriksson (also producer of the legendary Quatermass).  The resulting record featured excellent original compositions such as "Tyne God," "The Journey," "The House" and "Sun in a Bottle," along with a highly effective reworking of The Beatles' "And I Love Her." Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of a remastered edition of the 1979 album by the Canadian Progressive Rock group FM, "Surveillance."  The band began life in 1976 with Cameron Hawkins (synthesisers, bass, vocals) and Nash the Slash (Jeff Plewman) (electric violin, mandolin, vocals) coming together as a duo, making an appearance on national TV in Canada in the Summer of 1976. By March 1977 FM became a trio with the addition of Martin Dellar on drums. The band's debut album followed. By the end of the year Nash the Slash had been replaced by Ben Mink on electric violin and mandolin. "Surveillance" was the third album by the band, released in 1979, and was a hit of the progressive rock genre in the USA and Canada.  This Esoteric Recordings release is the first time "Surveillance" has been issued in Europe and has been newly remastered and includes an illustrated booklet and a new essay.

Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of a newly remastered anthology featuring the entire recorded output by the classic British band Cochise.  Cochise are unsung heroes of British rock of the early 70s. Formed in 1969, the band featured the talents of legendary pedal steel guitar player B.J. Cole, along with Stewart Brown (vocals, guitar), Mick Grabham (lead guitar), Rick Wills (bass) and John "Willie" Wilson (drums). The band signed to the UK division of United Artists in 1970, releasing their self-titled debut (with legendary sleeve designed by Hipgnosis) the same year. Over the next two years they recorded two further albums, "Swallow Tales" (which featured guest Steve Marriott) and "So Far" (featuring Roy Otemro on drums). Cochise produced fine music, with influences ranging from rock to Americana, and failed to make a commercial impact at the time. The calibre of the musicians came to be realised following the demise of the band, with B.J. Cole becoming a famed session musician, Mick Grabham joining Procol Harum, Rick Wills performing with Roxy Music, Small Faces and David Gilmour before joining Foreigner and Willie Wilson joining Quiver and later performing with David Gilmour.  This anthology has been newly remastered from the original master tapes and features an illustrated booklet with new essay.

Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce a newly remastered edition of the classic debut album by Danish Progressive Rock group Ache.  Formed in 1968, with a line-up of Torsten Olafsson (bass, vocals), Finn Olafsson (guitar, vocals), Peter Mellin (organ, piano) and Glen Fisher (drums and percussion), Ache first came to attention in Denmark with their work De Homine Urbano ("About Urban Man") which was the first ever rock ballet, performed by the Royal Danish Ballet Company in Copenhagen in 1969. Influenced by groups such as The Nice, Iron Butterfly and more, Ache's music was a powerful psychedelic progressive rock driven by Peter Mellin's powerful Hammond organ and the fluid guitar playing of Finn Olafsson.  The album "De Homine Urbano" was released in Europe by Philips Records in February 1970 and featured two tracks that dominated either side of the record.  Ache's second album, "Green Man" was released in June 1971 in Europe and was arguably the band's finest hour, featuring classics such as "Equatorial Rain," "The Invasion" and "Shadow of a Gypsy."  Hailed by Julian Cope in his on-line Danskrocksampler, Ache's two albums for Philips are now hailed as psych / prog classics. Following on from the successful series of reissues of Italian progressive rock legends PFM and Banco, Esoteric Recordings is pleased to announce the release of both albums by Italy's Acqua Fragile.  Formed in Milan, Acqua Fragile featured Bernardo Lanzetti (vocals, guitar), Gino Campanini (guitar, vocals), Maurizio Mori (keyboards, vocals), Franz Dondi (bass) and Piero Canavera (drums, guitar, vocals). Inspired by British groups such as Genesis and Family and by the success of fellow Italian group PFM, Acqua Fragile wrote original material and sung lyrics in English. No mere clones of their British counterparts, Acqua Fragile was an accomplished debut album with many marvellous songs. The music was inspired enough for vocalist Bernardo Lanzetti to be sought out as a future member of PFM.  These Esoteric Recordings reissues are newly re-mastered and fully restore the original album artwork. The booklets also features new essays with interviews with Bernardo Lanzetti.

Jan Akkerman/Talent For Sale ....import CD $20.99

Esoteric Recordings are proud to announce the first ever UK CD release of the rare 1968 debut solo album by future Brainbox and Focus guitarist Jan Akkerman.  The album was recorded after Akkerman's tenure with Dutch group The Hunters and was issued by EMI's Imperial label in the Netherlands. The sessions saw Akkerman joined by his Hunters band-mates Ron Bijtelar on bass and drummer Sidney Wachtel, with Cocky Akkerman playing drums on 'Slim Jenkins Place.'  The album was a clear indication of the future musical direction the highly talented guitarist was to follow in the band Brainbox and then as a member of Focus. The album featured a hoist of excellent tracks, including a memorable cover version of the Booker T and the MG's classic 'Green Onions.'

Drawing on material from the band's first four albums, recorded for the legendary Vertigo label, "Nimbus" features 18 of the band's best tracks. Formed in Glasgow in 1969 with a line-up of Ricky Gardiner (guitar, vocals), Alan Park (keyboards), Martin Griffiths (vocals), Marshall Erskine (bass, flute) and Raymond Wilson (drums), the band signed to the newly established progressive arm of Philips Records, Vertigo, in 1970. Their debut album, "Act One" gained some success in Europe with tracks such as "Poet and Peasant" and "Passacagalia." A successful European hit single, "Sarabande," was followed by the album "Waters of Change," arguably their best and most successful album, and a line-up change that saw Gordon Sellar replace Marshall Erskine on bass, and Virginia Scott join the group on Mellotron. The record included the classic "Time Machine," along with the memorable "Silver Peacock" and "I've No Idea."  "Pathfinder" from 1972 was another classic album and featured a wonderful cover of Jim Webb's "McArthur Park" along with "The Witch" and "Hobo." The band's final album for Vertigo, 1973's "Get Your Dog Off Me" saw further line-up changes, but included a fine cover of Mason Williams' "Classical Gas" and saw further European success for the band.   This anthology is a fine tribute to an inspiring band and has been newly remastered from the original master tapes, and features a booklet with new essay.

Signing to Virgin Records in 1975, Boxer recorded their debut album, "Below the Belt" at The Manor Studio in Oxfordshire. By March 1977 FM became a trio with the addition of Martin Dellar on drums. The Canadian Broadcasting Company offered to release the band's debut album, "Black Noise" on their own label later that year, but the record was only made available via mail order. Esoteric Recordings begin a series of releases drawn from Todd Rundgren's extensive archive of recordings with the first stand alone CD release of the Disco Jets project, recorded in 1976 by Todd and his group Utopia, featuring John Siegler (bass, vocals), Roger Powell (keyboards, vocals) and Willie Wilcox (drums).  The Disco Jets sessions took place at Bearsville studios shortly after the release of Todd's "Faithful" album and was a purely instrumental affair recorded "tongue in cheek" with sights firmly set upon the current trends of the time such as the U.S. Bi-Centennial celebrations, Disco music, Science Fiction movies such as Star Wars and the CB Radio fad. Chris Squire has appeared on every Yes album since 1969 and is widely regarded as one of the most influential bass guitarists of all time. Now an established solo artist, Steve Hackett first came to prominence as the guitarist with Genesis. He was with the band from 1970 to 1977 and played on six studio albums and featured on three live albums before leaving to concentrate on his solo career.

Of all the Tangerine Dream albums, Green Desert took over a decade from its initial recording sessions to completion. Wired To Earth is the stunning debut album from Swindon prog rockers Tin Spirits, featuring former XTC guitarist Dave Gregory. Released on the band's own Vibrola label, the album is marketed by Esoteric Recordings' new front-line label, Esoteric Antenna, dedicated to new releases by both new acts and established artists. Fans of Dave Gregory, (one of the most original and inventive guitarists the UK has ever produced), will find him in scintillating form on this new release. The album comprises four original compositions, along with a cover of the Genesis classic 'Back in NYC,' a heavy hint as to some of the influences at work here. With its complex arrangements, ambitious scale and outstanding musicianship, Wired To Earth channels the spirit of 1970s progressive rock, yet it remains firmly anchored to the present by strong melodies and irresistible hooks. This is progressive rock with impeccable pop sensibilities, and it provides a fittingly rich and varied backdrop for Dave Gregory's superb guitar work. This legendary progressive folk featured the talents of Leo O'Kelly and Sonny Condell. Formed in Dublin in 1969, the duo travelled to London to make a name for themselves on the UK folk circuit, earning a contract with Chrysalis Records in 1970. Securing a support slot with Jethro Tull, Tir na Nog came to the attention of a rock audience. The duo became a fixture on the concert circuit, opening for acts such as The Who, Elton John and Procol Harum and were also championed by John Peel. In 1971 their self-titled debut album was released to acclaim, thanks to the wonderfully diverse compositions and music featured. Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce a new remastered edition of the superb 1969 psychedelic progressive rock masterpiece by Touch. Formed in 1968 by former Kingsmen keyboard player Don Gallucci, the band also featured Joey Newman (guitar), Bruce Hauser (bass), Jeff Hawks (vocals) and John Barnardo (drums). Making their home in a Moorish style mansion in the Hollywood Hills, Touch created an album both experimental and ground breaking in style.  Their debut album was recorded at Sunset Sound Studios in Hollywood and sessions saw admirers such as Jimi Hendrix, Grace Slick and Mick Jagger visit the studio to offer encouragement and support to the band. Tracks such as the epic "Seventy Five" and "The Spiritual Death of Howard Greer" were hallmarks of the album's excellence. Another highlight track, "Down at Circe's Place" gained the band a UK following when it was included on the Deram sampler "Wowie Zowie - The World of Progressive Music" in 1969. Four decades on, "Touch" is now rightly hailed as a masterpiece of the era.

'ALT' is a new studio album by the legendary Van der Graaf Generator and follows on from the release of "A Grounding in Numbers" in 2011.  "Alt" is no ordinary Van der Graaf Generator album (if the term "ordinary" could ever be applied to this visionary group). Peter Hammill explains; "Instrumental improvs & experiments - most of the music on "Alt" was made while we weren't really looking, or perhaps only while the left side of our collective brain was engaged. The album is a mixture of improvisations recorded at sound checks and in the studio and more considered sonic creations which often verge on Musique Concrete. The thirteen pieces here offer a fascinating glimpse into an alternative Van der Graaf Generator sound world. Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the latest release on the new front-line label, Esoteric Antenna, dedicated to new releases by both new acts and established artists, the marvellous "Parachute Reborn" by former Pretty Things members, the XPTs, featuring Wally Waller, Jon Povey, Pete Tolson and Skp Alan.  In June 1970, the Pretty Things released their seminal album "Parachute," a record with a collection of songs (written by Phil May and Wally Waller) that tackled the subject of the gradual realization that the dreams of the counter-culture movement of the late 1960s were beginning to unravel. Upon its release the album was hailed by the US magazine Rolling Stone as "album of the year" - a remarkable feat when one considers the competing releases by such heavy weights as Led Zeppelin, The Who et al.  Fast forward four decades and Pretty Things members Wally Waller, Jon Povey, Pete Tolson and Skip Alan found themselves in a studio in Spain, undertaking the challenge of revisiting the material written and recorded on "Parachute," extending and reworking the material to produce the album "Parachute Reborn." First ever UK CD releases for these classic albums from the master percussionist and ambient musician - all remastered from the original master tapes.  Stomu Yamashta is a master percussionist who studied jazz drumming at Berklee School of Jazz. In the 1970's he recorded a string of innovative albums for Island Records which utilized the talents of such leading musicians as Hugh Hopper, Morris Pert, Steve Winwood, Michael Shrieve and Klaus Schulze and more, fusing his percussion talents with jazz, electronic and classical music to create an ambient form of music all of his own. His music has been used by the Royal Ballet. His first Island album, "Floating Music" was recorded with the band Come to the Edge, which included Morris Pert, and gains its first European CD release with this reissue. "Poker Dice" and "One Way" were used by Nicholas Roeg in the soundtrack of the David Bowie film The Man Who Fell to Earth. Originally released in 1973 for Island Records, "The Man from the East" was the soundtrack to a fascinating theatre-piece Yamashta presented in Paris and London in 1972. 'Memory of Hiroshima' also appeared on the film soundtrack of The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) and, with 'Poker Dice' and 'One Way,' has since attained mythical status among fans.   Originally released in 1974 on Island Records, "One By One" was the soundtrack to the racing movie directed by Claude du Boc. This Esoteric Recordings reissue marks the album's debut on CD and has been remastered from the original master tapes.   Originally released in April 1976, "Go" is perhaps Yamashta's finest achievement and also featured collaborators Steve Winwood and Michael Shrieve along with artists such as Klaus Schulze, Al Di Meola and ex-Traffic and future Can bassist Rosko Gee.
