Over the years ESD has expanded into various genres of music, but now concentrates on 'progressive' music, characterized by prodigious musicianship, shifting time signatures, and creative approaches.

The second release from this Twin Cities-based quartet maintains the lush atmosphere of their well-received debut, but also reveals sharper edges and more passionate outbursts. This time around, the groups moody ambient pop comes with a side-order of electroshock therapy. Vocalist James Diers' soothing melodies continue to belie the dark and sometimes disturbing lyrical threads; eerie, espansive bass lines by Matt Friesen are simultaneously inviting and unsettling; drummer David King (The Bad Plus, Happy Apple) directs his near-nuclear rhythmic energy into impossible fills and playful acoustic/electronic counterpoint; and all the while keyboardist and sound architect Ev provides the glue, building an evocative palette of sounds and laptop manipulations. ESD proudly presents two volumes of previously unreleased film music by Wendy Carlos. After her pioneering electronic interpretations of classical music with the 1968 Grammy-winning recording Switched-On Bach (ESD 81602), Carlos achieved another milestone in the film score world with her music to Stanley Kubricks landmark A Clockwork Orange. Scores to Kubricks The Shining and Disneys innovative computer-generated TRON followed. Through the years, Carlos has also scored other motion pictures which did not reach wide distribution. As with many film projects, much of the music she originally created for the movies didn't make its way into the films. Previous soundtrack albums and complete score recordings have left behind some great work. Rediscovering Lost Scores is a two-volume collection of Wendy Carloss film music which has never been available on a sound recording. Volume One has 32 segments consisting of music created for The Shining, a few previously lost tracks meant for A Clockwork Orange, as well as compositions for a series of UNICEF films.

In 1971 Wendy Carlos was among the first artists to use a postage paid 'bounceback' card in a commercial record release. Innocently she and her producer, Rachel Elkind, asked their listeners for their suggestions on future Moog synthesizer recordings. By 1974 they had accumulated many boxes full of these cards, all pulling in different directions for new music to record in the million-selling wake of Switched-On Bach. The result of that democratic process was this collection, By Request. Wendy's signature sound on Bach's Second Brandenburg Concerto and the 'Little' Fuge is presented side by side with The Beatles and Burt Bacharach, plus Tchaikovsky's 'Nutcracker' and original compositions by Wendy herself. Topping off the collection was an irreverant version of Elgar's 'Pomp and Circumstances March #1' (the unofficial anthem of theBritish Empire) re-titled as 'Pompous Circumstances' with the melody masquerading in the styles of a wide range of classical composers. CBS Records in England, however, were not amused, and this track was unceremoniously cut from the UK release of the album. Amost 30 years later the missing track (once 'Banned In Brittain') is restored to the collection and released for the first time on CD! Hi-D 20-bit enhanced.

Digital Moonscapes comprises two suites for digitally synthesized orchestra inspired by astronomical subjects. In 1982 Wendy Carlos built a library of voices replicating as closely as possible the features of acoustic instruments. Performing and recording several dozen of these replicas together in an ensemble produced the world's first digitally synthesized orchestra, the LSI Philharmonic (i.e. from "Large Scale Integrated" computer chips). All sounds on this 1984 recording were fine-tuned by ear, without digital sampling or microphones. Its careful balance between natural room-sound ambience and three dimensional stereo placement gives the recording an uncanny sense of 'scrim free' orchestral transparency. The compositions were inspired by astronomical subjects. Cosmological Impressions is a mini-voyage though time and space. Moonscapes is a nine movement suite in the spirit of Holst's "The Planets," about the major moons of the solar system.

Ranarim is a Swedish folk sextet who bring a pop sensibility to traditional music. The focus of their sound is the lovely vocal harmonies of their two female singers, whose catchy melodies have brought critical comparisons to ABBA (Sweden's true pop royalty). Along with nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle) and guitar, the band have added a rhythm section of bass and percussion, employed tastefully and discreetly. Both music and lyrics are drawn largely from traditional repertoire, although original compositions are blended seamlessly as well.

In the late 1980s, Hĺllbus Totte Mattson, Anders Norudde and Björn Tollin found that in spite of totally different musical backgrounds they share the same basic groove, and a desire to go far back for the roots of the Old Norse culture. These three formed the core trio that is Nordic supergroup Hedningarna. "Hedning" means "heathen" but also "unfaithful:" this band from the beginning has set its own course. Anders started to invent and build new instruments so that they could produce the sounds they were hearing in their heads. Acknowledging their infernal groove, Hedningarna soon became the most popular band for dancing in Sweden. In 1989 the trio recorded this, their first album, a set of instrumental dance tunes.
