EMI Classics are pleased to release two symphonic works by Jon Lord, better known as a founder member of one of the all-time great rock groups, Deep Purple. Lord's new Piano Concerto, 'Boom of the Tingling Strings,' is performed by Nelson Goerner with the Odense Symfoniorkester under conductor Paul Mann, the concerto's dedicatee. Lord's Suite for String Orchestra, entitled 'Disguises,' completes the programme. Parallel to his rock career, Jon Lord has composed music for orchestra for nearly forty years. Sometimes described as 'classical cross-over,' Lord's compositions reflect his many musical enthusiasms, which, in addition to orchestral music and rock, include jazz and folk music. While still a member of the 'band,' Lord's Concerto for Group and Orchestra was recorded by Deep Purple with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Malcolm Arnold, selling hundreds of thousands of copies worldwide. Since leaving the re-formed Deep Purple in 2002, Jon has focused his attention on composing.

Reissue of the German prog rock outfit's second and third album (first and second for EMI), originally issued on EMI in 1973 and 1974. Both titles were remastered in 2000 and are now being released domestically. Inside has 6 tracks including 'Land Of No Body' and 'Inside'. Floating includes 5 tracks plus 3 previously unreleased tracks - 'Future City' (Live), 'Castle In The Air' (Liive) and 'Flying High' (Live).

In the 1970s the United Artist label, under the stewardship of Andrew Lauder, was home to some of the most diverse and innovative artists on the British music scene. Of these artists, few have been as durable and as innovative as Man. The roots of Man lay in the healthy local South Wales live circuit of the early 1960s; they helped establish the core of the pub-rock sound, but they played louder and also had a progressive componenent to ther work that separated them from many of their rivals. Whilst signed to UA they released three top 30 albums on the UK charts - Back into the Future, Rhinos Winos & Lunatics and Maxium Darkness. Tracks from each of these albums are featured. This long awaited anthology charts the band's career, and also includes three previously unreleased tracks.

High Tide are a key link in the late '60s/early '70s chain of developmental heavy metal. Even the most well-versed rock critics and scholars will look stumped if you mention their name - outside their tiny cult, they were virtually unknown even in their time, and naturally completely forgotten in the three decades since their breakup after only releasing two LPs. In the pre-Sabbath, post-Hendrix days of 1969, no one was heavier. Aptly named, High Tide completely engulf the listener in crashing, crushing waves of over amplified guitar riffage, with no letup whatsoever. Call them the British answer to Blue Cheer. They pushed the limits of stoned jamming noise before anybody else with sometimes amusing and often ridiculous results.

Sweet Smoke was an American music group living and playing in Europe from 1970 till 1974. Orignally from Brooklyn, the group moved to Germany where they lived as a family commune. Within a year of their arrival they recorded their first LP, Just a Poke, which almost immediatly turned them into a sort of cult icon of the underground scene which was beginning to emerge as Europe's response to the American hippy scene. An extremely resourceful and creative group, they took the art of spontaneous improvising to new heights, very often involving their audiences in their music. Words like rock jazz, acid rock, raga rock, hard rock, experimental music are only some of the words used to describe their music. Looking back one can see the early roots of fusion and new age music beginning to manifest through them. Though the basic group consisted of 5 musicians, they came to most of their concerts with their communal famly (10-15 of their friends) who helped them on and off stage to create an atmosphere of a musical happening.

Following on from the 2005 album 'Present,' Van Der Graaf Generator have put together a brand new album titled 'Trisector.' Van Der Graaf Generator now a stripped-down trio of members Hugh Banton (organ), Guy Evans (drums) and Peter Hammill (vox, guitar, piano), made a storming return to live performance in the spring of 2007. The band started recording their new album in July 2007 and after a period of mixing and overdubbing 'Trisector' is now ready for release. There are nine pieces on the album, one of them instrumental. Unusually for VDGG, only one of these is more than ten minutes long - indeed, five come in at under five minutes. There are, of course, passages of great complexity but there's also a confidence about the group which allows them to leave some simple things as they are. These are songs which dictate their own terms, often with a healthy dose of gallows humour, always with a measure of invention.

Following the success of "This Land of Ours," a set of arrangements for brass band and male voice choir that took Britain's most popular living composer back to his Welsh roots, Karl Jenkins returns with a new work to complement his massively successful "Requiem" and "Armed Man." The at once emotional, modern, culturally diverse and universally accessible style that has come to characterise the composer's sound is perfectly exemplified in this poignant new choral album. The orchestration includes instruments indigenous to the area, percussion such as the darbuka & riq and the woodwind duduk. Although not released until 1979, this March 1965 session by Wayne Shorter is a classic. The three-horn front line inspires Shorter as a composer and arranger, and Freddie Hubbard and James Spaulding are a fiery pair of soloists. The rhythm section features the unique combination of McCoy Tyner and Tony Williams. From the intricate, darting "Angola" to the melodic beauty of "Lady Day," this album is just further confirmation of Shorter's genius as a saxophonist and a composer.

The party was seen as the final gathering of freaks, hippies and anarchists. The concert bill also featured the under-rated band Brinsley Schwarz (featuring Nick Lowe and future Rumour members Bob Andrews and Brinsley Schwarz), pioneers of the Pub Rock genre and freak extraordinaire Magic Michael. The concert was staged to raise funds for the Greasy Truckers organization, who raised funds for various local causes such as homelessness, advice on dealing with being busted for possession of cannabis and other mind altering substances and other social issues. Disc One features five tracks from Man. Disc Two features 16 from Brinsley Schwarz and one from Magic Michael. Disc Three contains 12 songs from Hawkwind. EMI.

During the early '70s, Lindisfarne was one of the hottest folk-based rock bands in England with chart placements on two of their albums that rivaled Jethro Tull and had them proclaimed one of the most important groups of the decade. With a sound that mixed plaintive folk-like melodies, earthy but well-sung harmonies, and acoustic and electric textures, the group was signed to Tony Stratten-Smith's Charisma Records, England's premiere progressive rock label, in 1970. They released their first album, Nicely Out of Tune, that same year. Their debut album captured the group's best attributes, a rollicking, upbeat, optimistic collection of hippie-folk music, somewhere midway between Fairport Convention and the early Grateful Dead, with a peculiarly urban, English working-class ambience. Founder and frontman Alan Hull was referred to in the UK press as the most important new songwriter since Bob Dylan and Lindisfarne was saddled with the designation as "the 1970s Beatles." Their second album, Fog on the Tyne, released in 1971, marked their commercial breakthrough - a collection of earthy, folk-type pub songs, the album entered the British charts in October of the year and began a slow climb into the middle reaches. In February of 1972, however, the group's label belatedly issued a single from the album, "Meet Me on the Corner." That record was #5 on the charts the following month while Fog on the Tyne suddently rose to the #1 spot. The Best of collection features their best known hits including "Fog on the Tyne," "Meet Me on the Corner," "Lady Eleanor" and All Fall Down."

By the time Nadir's Big Chance was recorded, Van der Graaf had made the decision to reform (for Godbluff). Hammill tried to steer well clear of Van der Graaf territory, creating an album that is said to have helped glavanize the burgeoning punk generation, including John Lydon (Public Image Ltd.) who cites Hammill as one of his inspirations. This 1975 album has been digitally remastered with Hammill's participation and includes expanded liner notes. "Representing a stylistic left turn for Peter Hammill, this raucous, messy, rock platter was often cited as an influence by the first wave of punks in England. One of England's longest enduring bands, Hawkwind was formed during the late '60s just as art-rock was coming into its own. A double live CD set recorded during Oldfield's '78 world tour featuring an entourage that included a 50 piece orchestra and full choir. The first disc premiered Oldfield's "Incantations" with a new expansively rich orchestration while the second disc features arguably the ultimate, 40 minute epic version of his classic "Tubular Bells."

For Five Miles Out, Oldfield drew his inspiration from a harrowing, near-death incident while piloting an airplane above the Pyrenees mountain range in Spain. Paddy Maloney, the leader of The Chieftans joins Oldfield on "Taurus II" the album's extended track. Vocalist Maggie Reilly sings Oldfield's best known pop composition "Family Man," which later became a Top Ten US hit for Daryl Hall and John Oates when they recorded it a year later.

Heaven's Open followed the familiar structure of one long work followed by pop songs that Oldfield had so successfully used on Platinum. Hergest Ridge was Mike Oldfield's follow-up to Tubular Bells. Incantations was the first album to display Oldfield's fully matured composing talents, using sophisticated orchestrations and vocals which would play an increasingly important role in his compositions.

Islands followed the release of his soundtrack to The Killing Fields and continued his interest in using ethnic music as the foundation for his compositions. For Islands, Oldfield traveled to the South Pacific with a film crew and recording engineers and used the exotic samples of Indonesian and Balinese musicians they recorded as the basis for his compositions. Breaking the pattern of his previous albums, Platinum contained a varied range of material mixing pop, rock, folk and classical styles, featuring vocals from Steeleye Span's Maddy Prior.

So these are identical in every respect to the more expensive European release.

The Quiet Zone/The Pleasure Dome is the only prog rock album (and groupo) at the time to have been accepted and heralded by rock critics during the tumultuous on rush of punk. In fact, Johnny Rotten was a huge Van der Graaf Generator fan. Includes three bonus tracks.

Emotionally charged and instrospective, Still Life reaches a level of painful beauty that few bands have matched. Includes the bonus track Gog (live).

Vital is Van der Graaf Generator's swansong; a live double disc set featuring intense performances of some of the band's best material that Record Collector magazine says "shreds the originals, with Peter Hammill in loud rock guitar mode." The Body was a medical documentary directed by Roy Battersby and produced by Tony Garnett in 1970.
