The Lost Tapes was curated by Irmin Schmidt and Daniel Miller, and compiled by Schmidt and long time collaborator Jono Podmore. When the legendary Can studio in Weilerswist was sold to the German Rock N Pop Museum, they bought everything, including the army mattresses that covered the walls for sound protection, and relocated it to Gronau. While dismantling the studio, master tapes were found and stored in the Spoon archive. With barely legible labeling, no one was sure what was on these until Irmin and Jono started to go through over 30 hours of music. What they found was years of archived material, not outtakes, but rather tracks which had been shelved for a variety of reasons. Can's influence is well known and far-reaching and the impact they made on music is felt today as keenly as it ever has been. They themselves have always been impossible to classify and reflecting this, the scope of artists who in recent years have cited Can as a major influence is varied from John Lydon to Radiohead, The Fall to Portishead. For an album so popular, it's remarkably bleak, chilly, and dark, even radio favorites like "I Don't Remember" and "Games Without Frontiers" are hardly cheerful, spiked with paranoia and suspicion, insulated in introspection. For the first time, Gabriel has found the sound to match his themes, plus the songs to articulate his themes. Each aspect of the album works, feeding off each other, creating a romantically gloomy, appealingly arty masterpiece. It's the kind of record where you remember the details in the production as much as the hooks or the songs, which isn't to say that it's all surface, it's just that the surface means as much as the songs, since it articulates the emotions as well as Gabriel's cubist lyrics and impassioned voice. He wound up having albums that sold more, or generated bigger hits, but this third Peter Gabriel album remains a masterpiece.

The gloom that permeates the third album has been alleviated and while this is still decidedly somber and serious music, it has a brighter feel - partially derived from Gabriel's dabbling in African and Latin rhythms. These are generally used as tonal coloring, enhancing the synthesizers that form the basic musical bed of the record. 4 flows easily and enticingly, as well as the eerie "San Jacinto," "I Have the Touch," & "Shock the Monkey." 4 remains a powerful listen, proving that he is becoming a master of tone, style, and substance, and how each part of the record enhances the other.

When Leon Russell's then label, Shelter Records, released the triple-disc 'Leon Live' album in 1973, Russell was at the top of his game as a rock performer. Recorded at the Long Beach Arena in California on August 28, 1972, in front of 20,000 sreaming fans, it reached #9 on the charts and earned Russell another gold record. A single from the album, "Queen of the Roller Derby," charted as well. Many reviewers call the album, "the best live album in rock music." Unbeknownst to most except the most diehard Russell fans was the fact that in 1974 Shelter Records released a completely different "live" album available only in Japan and appropriately titled 'Live in Japan.' The album was recorded live on November 8, 1973, at the historic Nippon Budokan Hall where The Beatles made their Japanese debut as well as the location where many "Live at the Budokan" albums were recorded. This show was the first of two back-to-back dates at the Budokan for Russell. The bonus tracks are extraordinary in many respects, including the quality. They are drawn from an April 22, 1971, date at Sam Houston Coliseum in Houston, Texas. They show a raw, gritty singer and his band just as they are about to take off. It also demonstrates why Russell was considered one of the greatest live acts in the annals of rock music.

For over 40 years, Richard Thompson has been the guitarists' guitarist, the songwriters' songwriter, and a consummate artist. As a founder of the legendary British folk-rock group Fairport Convention, through the '70s releases with his then-wife, Linda Thompson, to his highly successful solo career and work as a session player for other artists, Thompson has left behind a trail of recordings and compositions nearly unequaled in modern music history. His solo career can be traced to 1972's Henry The Human Fly, after which he went on to record a string of critically acclaimed albums with Linda Thompson. It wasn't until 1981 that Thompson released another solo album, this time it was called Strict Tempo! and, not surprisingly, due to his gifts as an instrumentalist, was an instrumental album that showcased his extraordinary talents by Thompson playing all instruments himself, accompanied only by former Fairport bandmate Dave Mattacks on drums/percussion. Strict Tempo! was originally released on Thompson's own imprint, Elixir, in 1981 and later reissued by the Hannibal label but has been out of print for some time. The year 2011 marks the 30th Anniversary of this dexterous collection of traditional jigs and reels - with an original Thompson composition and a Duke Ellington cover thrown in for good measure. Omnivore Recordings is proud to celebrate the reissue of this recording on CD.
