June Tabor-Iain Ballamy-Huw Warren/Quercus ....CD $17.99

Quercus means 'oak' in Latin and the roots of this particular tree dig deep into British folk music, while leaves and branches reach upward to embrace jazz-inspired lyrical improvising.  The trio features the venerable English singer June Tabor whose dark voice has an uncanny ability to underscore the emotional essence of a ballad: "As I get older, I understand more the depths of sorrow and joy that made the song," she has said.  Tabor, who was recently voted BBC Folk Awards Singer Of The Year, is joined in the Quercus project by Welsh jazz pianist and composer Huw Warren, and by English saxophonist/composer Iain Ballamy, well-known to ECM listeners as co-leader of the band Food and well-known to fans of Bill Bruford as one of the orignal members of Bruford's incredible Earthworks ensemble. This is the first Quercus album but the trio has existed already for five years, patiently developing its unique idiomatic blend.

Imagine a world without Machine Head. Imagine a Deep Purple set-list without Smoke On The Water. Imagine a time when the music business had yet to become a vast multi-national conglomerate. This was the primordial landscape on March 1st, 1972 when Deep Purple took to the stage at the Kobenhavns Boldklub (KB) Hallen in Copenhagen. It was a time of no boundaries or restrictions, no blueprints or formulas. Rock music wasn't exactly in its infancy, but there were still plenty of new territories to explore, mountains to climb, peaks to conquer. It was a time when anything was possible. And Purple were on a mission to prove it.  Purple had completed their Machine Head album at the tail-end of 1971 but at the time of this recording it hadn't arrived in the shops yet.  Nevertheless, their show contained three songs Highway Star, Lazy and Space Truckin from that legendary release. It must have been a mind-boggling hang on a minute, make that life-changing experience, to be part of the Danish audience this stellar night.

Everything about this recording is spontaneous and un-choreographed, loose and lethal, teetering and tempestuous. An explosive combination of brinkmanship and barely controlled chaos. Which, in a lip-synched and auto-tuned modern-day music world, comes as a breath of fresh air. The high spots just keep on coming. Jon Lord s heroic keyboard playing on Lazy, the mischievous guitar-vocal sparring between Blackmore and Gillan on Strange Kind Of Woman, the positively progressive vibe of The Mule, before Ian Paice's epic drum solo kicks in, Gillan showing exactly why he gained the proud title of silver-throated screamer on Child In Time and Glover's often under acknowledged bass-lines underpinning each song like a network of steel girders. The list goes on...  As if that isn't enough, the reissue also includes three bonus live tracks Strange Kind Of Woman, Smoke On The Water and Space Truckin recorded in New York (at Hofstra University, Hempstead, Long Island, to be precise) on May 29th, 1973. Not to mention an insightful interview piece from Purple's 1971 Australian tour.  Copenhagen 1972 is the second of a 10 releases spanning re-issue series of Deep Purple.

The Beach Boys were the most successful American pop group of the sixties producing a string of classic singles and albums. After a difficult period in the early seventies the original line-up of brothers Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson, their cousin Mike Love and long standing friend Al Jardine, regrouped in 1976 and released a new studio album 15 Big Ones.  This DVD was originally made for American television following the release of that album. It combines full live performances of their greatest hits from the Anaheim Stadium with band interviews and wonderful sequences including Dennis Wilson judging a beauty pageant, Carl Wilson flying a plane and Brian Wilson being arrested for violation of the surf code by the original Blues Brothers, Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, in the guise of highway patrolmen.  From the three Wilson brothers singing a song about their father to the full band harmonizing with a gospel choir this DVD is full of gems but above all it is the five original Beach Boys performing fantastic versions of their best known songs.

Rainbow was formed by Ritchie Blackmore in 1975 after he left Deep Purple at the height of their fame. They were instantly successful and released a string of hit albums with an ever changing line-up between 1975 and 1983, when Blackmore broke up the group to join the re-formed Deep Purple. This concert from their European tour in 1977 features the line-up responsible for the "Long Live Rock 'n' Roll" album released later that year, including vocalist Ronnie James Dio and drummer Cozy Powell. Blackmore had to be smuggled out of Austria after trouble with the police at a gig two nights earlier and was very late arriving in Munich, all of which seemed to inspire both the band and the audience to create a truly remarkable gig.   DVD run time 146 minutes. Paul Motian/Paul Motian ....6 CD Set $43.99

This six-CD set, with recordings from 1972 to 1984, includes the albums Conception Vessel, Tribute, Dance, Le Voyage, Psalm and It Should've Happened A Long Time Ago. Paul Motian's innovative drumming with the great trios of Bill Evans and Paul Bley had already assured him of a place in jazzs history books, but Motian had not considered life as a bandleader until ECM proposed a recording session under his own name. Conception Vessel opened floodgates of creativity. Through these recordings we hear not only the evolution of several outstanding Motian ensembles and the birth of the enduring Motian/Frisell/Lovano trio, but also the growth of confidence of a unique jazz composer. In Paul's music, memories of Turkish and Armenian melodies he had heard as a child were filtered through a love of jazz. Early in his career, Paul had played with Thelonious Monk, and Monk's wayward sense of dynamics remained a reference for him, but he also loved the free expressive possibilities of the new jazz. Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden, regular partners in Keith's trio and quartet, encouraged Paul's creative flight on, respectively, Conception Vessel and Tribute. The Small Faces first American album, "There Are but Four Small Faces," will be available for the first time on CD. The album features the worldwide hits 'Itchycoo Park' and 'Tin Soldier.' The music here is much more fully developed and experimental than their previous recordings, but still largely R&B based, but with lots of unusual sounds and recording techniques being attempted. The American version of this album has never been available on CD. The album was unique because it was compiled from various UK hit single sides and strong album cuts. It features the original album art. All tracks are stereo including two new exclusive stereo mixes of 'My Way of Giving' and 'I'm Only Dreaming.'

In September 1967 The Beatles embarked on making their third film, this time conceived and directed by themselves.  Based on a loose unscripted narrative, in the spirit of the experimental mood of the time, and directed by The Beatles themselves, the film became the vehicle to present 6 new songs - "Magical Mystery Tour," "The Fool On The Hill," "Flying," "I Am The Walrus," "Blue Jay Way" and "Your Mother Should Know."  Now, 45 years on, the virtually forgotten film has been fully restored and is being presented properly for the first time.  The restoration of Magical Mystery Tour has been overseen by Paul Rutan Jr. of Eque Inc., the same company that handled the much acclaimed restoration of Yellow Submarine. The soundtrack work was done at Abbey Road Studios by Giles Martin and Sam Okell.  All of the packages contain a host of special features, packed with unseen footage. A Walk Across the Rooftops was originally released in 1984 on Linn Records, a label set up specifically to release the album. Linn Electronics of Glasgow wanted a recording to demonstrate 'the fidelity and versatility' of a recording console they had developed. New Blood is a continuum of Peter's previous 'Scratch My Back' album - the song-swap project where he covered the songs of others, all to an orchestral backing. Thanks to the precise arrangements by John Metcalf and Peter, the treatment was so successful that Peter very quickly knew where he wanted to take it next, and work began to apply the same principals to his own songs.  Great care has been taken - and much discussion shared - in deciding what songs were included on New Blood. It wasn't simply a case of giving the big numbers an orchestral re-rub. Indeed, some of the big hits are missing in favour of lesser-known material.
