Burning Shed

Burning Shed is a new online on-demand CDR label set up by Tim Bowness and Peter Chilvers in association with Noisebox label boss Pete Morgan.  Run by artists for artists, the intention is to create a strongly focused, artistically coherent and financially feasible medium through which uniquely packaged CDRs of creative non-mainstream music can be sold at a budget price as and when they're requested.

The first run of releases includes an album of previously unreleased material by Steven Wilson's (No-Man/Porcupine Tree) celebrated electronica creation Bass Communion, the second album by ambient folk band Alias Grace, a compiliation of singles by post-rock miserablists and John Peel favourites Navigator and an unreleased live album by brooding, late night singer-songwriter project Tim Bowness / Samuel Smiles dating from 1991.

We are pleased to announce the release of The TLG Collection CD by Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin, a 66-minute, 14-track compilation of rarities including demos, bonus tracks, alternative mixes and TV soundtrack songs recorded between 1983 and 2001. The album was originally sold in a limited edition to the audience at Tokyo's TLG club in 2001 and has not been available since - the music remains unchanged from the Japanese edition but the artwork has been redesigned and now includes new sleeve images by artist Mike Inns, photos from the duo's personal archive, full track credits and extended sleeve notes by Dave Stewart. We are pleased to announce the release of Music From a Walled Garden, the new solo album by Dirk 'Mont' Campbell. Mont was founder member and main composer of the experimental rock group Egg (1969-1972). The CD is a sequel to his 1996 solo work Music from a Round Tower, which was placed third in the International Green Dolphin Critics' Awards for that year, and continues his exploratory style of composition introducing rare non-western instrumental performance directly into western harmonic and formal structures. 'The music that you hear on this disc is an attempt to emulate a soundtrack, or musical backdrop, I constructed for the 2008 Salthouse Art Festival in North Norfolk. My intention was to have a piece of music that would play throughout the duration of the exhibition. I wanted it to be continually changing so as not to be tedious yet to be 'self-contained'. I decided to do this in the following way: Twenty 'events' (tracks of birdsong, bells, sparse melodies, vocal lines, bass notes etc.) were recorded on to four identical CDs. These tracks incidently included four 'events' of silences of varying lengths. The CDs were then placed in four machines that were set to 'random shuffle' and 'repeat all'. Thus an ever-changing random backdrop was set to 'self-compose'. I had made sure that the musical elements would not clash uncomfortably, having chosen the Lydian mode and sticking to it throughout.   A slightly different approach had to be taken in the creation of this C.D. I wished to keep the chance element, so critical to the 'live' soundtrack, and did so in the following simple manner:  Each 'event' was designated a number (1-20) and corresponding numbers were written with indelible felt-tipped pen on twenty old sixpences. These coins were then shaken in my hands and blindly sorted into a pile. The coin (number) at the top was the first event to be placed on track one. Once all coins were used up, I shook them, piled them and started track two–and so on to track four. I was honest with myself throughout this process and didn't change the chance order even when it looked like minutes of silence followed one another. I was,in fact, pleasantly surprised to hear how smoothly it sounded. I occasionally listen to 'Flood' at low volume whilst going about my day, it again becomes what it was intended to be, a backdrop rather than a focal point.' Roger Eno, 2008

Sensory is a collaboration between composer Marvin Ayres and film maker Pete Gomes. Conceived specifically for DVD, it was intended to work as both a public space installation and as something that could be viewed domestically. Archive recordings 1973-1975, Volume 2!  As on the highly popular Hatwise Choice (released in January 2005), the recordings are a mixture of live and studio tracks (including extracts from the band's radio sessions) and feature some hitherto unrecorded compositions.  Perhaps the best-loved of the so-called 'Canterbury' bands, Hatfield's music was a unique blend of its four members' ideas and compositions. Hattitude reflects this rich diversity, combining the dreamy lyrical songs of Richard Sinclair, Phil Miller's intricate jazz-tinged melodies, Dave Stewart's complex instrumentals and the free-flowing compositions of Pip Pyle, which include a touching autobiographical song. The written passages are punctuated with extended improvisations in which the band cut loose in a way they never quite managed to do on their 1970s studio albums.  Hattitude gives a rare insight into the band's live performances at a time of rapid musical development, charting their evolution from early gigs (including a notable concert recorded in the swirly psychedelic acoustics of Amsterdam's Paradiso club) through to the more sophisticated arrangements of 1975. En route there are moments of surreal humour and instrumental virtuosity, coupled with instances of sheer sonic savagery which reveal the extent of the madness in Hatfield's method. Virtually all the material is from first generation audio sources which have been digitally restored, ensuring good sound quality throughout.

The CD comes in a full colour Digipak with a 20-page booklet containing archive photos and period artwork. The band history initiated in Hatwise Choice continues with the four musicians recounting behind-the-scenes events, road stories, musical reflections and descriptions of recording their debut album in Oxfordshire's Manor Studios. These personal memoirs provide a detailed chronicle of the events of 1973, a 'year in the life' of a young, talented and exciting British band.  Hattitude is performed by the classic Hatfield line-up of Phil Miller (guitar), Pip Pyle (drums), Richard Sinclair (bass / vocals) and Dave Stewart (keyboards / tone generators).

Sadly, the CD follows the recent untimely death of the band's drummer and founder member Pip Pyle, who died in Paris on August 28th 2006. Keyboardist Dave Stewart says: "We are devastated by losing Pip - he was our dear friend, a brilliant drummer and an immensely creative lifelong colleague who I regarded as the driving force of Hatfield. He did a great job compiling the material for our archive CD's and was very keen that we should continue the series, so we are dedicating Hattitude (which contains moments of Pip at his best) to him. The music scene will be a duller place without Pip, but his memory and music will live on."

Just Desserts contains much of the ambient atmosphere of their earlier work, while also adding a stronger rhythmic approach and a more pronounced World Music influence.  Taken from both live and studio recording sources, the album featues prominent use of Robert's guitar and Brian's saxophone, as well a variety of exotic instrumentation and inventive post-production approaches.  Moving from haunting soundscapes to strongly jazz influenced pieces, Just Desserts is an excellent follow up to the highly regarded Virtuality.

Earth to Ether is the new studio album by British saxophonist / flautist / composer Theo Travis. As Palle Mikkelborg rarely agrees to contribute to or collaborate on other projects, his participation in this project is a strong endorsement of Travis' increasingly personal style and his identifiable musical vision.

When Hillage left the band Uriel continued as an organ trio, later changing their name to Egg.  Arzachel Collectors Edition is a re-mastered version of the legendary 1969 psychedelic album recorded under a pseudonym by Uriel, featuring the amazing 17-year old Steve Hillage on guitar throughout.
