The Enid/Sheets of Blue - An Anthology

A double CD with artwork specially commissioned and overseen by Robert John Godfrey. Featuring a cross section of The Enid's work throughout their recording career, this anthology starts in 1975 with 'In The Region of the Summer Stars' and progresses through; Aerie Faerie Nonsense, Touch Me, Live At Hammersmith, Six Pieces, Something Wicked This Way Comes, The Spell, Liverpool, Salome, The Seed and the Sower, Tripping the Light Fantastic and White Goddess with almost 2 1/2 hours of the best of The Enid.   Nietzsche once said, "what does not kill me makes me stronger." And, miracle of miracles, they will always make worthwhile music.

All The Blue Changes is the first career-overview compilation in No-Man's history and in addition to tracks from all the band's official albums contains b-sides, unique mixes and rare album outtakes.  Since 1988, over the course of five massively varied albums and several singles/outtakes collections, No-Man has produced a unique body of challenging work that has developed from the band's proto Trip-Hop/Dream Pop origins into something beyond easy categorisation.  After initial ecstatic press plaudits, indie top 20 hits and high profile contracts with One Little Indian and Epic/Sony, the band continued to write and evolve throughout a sometimes difficult 1990s. Recording and re-defining themselves through an ever changing and creatively vital music, No-Man released material via Materiali Sonori, Third Stone and internet label Burning Shed, gradually building up a loyal worldwide cult following that luxuriated in the band's increasingly ambitious sound.   Drawing from a diverse mix of Chamber Jazz, New Classical, Singer-songwriter, Progressive, Dream Pop, Trip Hop and Contemporary Electronica sources for inspiration, No-Man are one of the most intriguing British bands of the last two decades, creating an emotive and ethereal fusion of panoramic soundscapes, cracked ballads and sonic surprises.   Through the years, the band, consisting of North Westerner Tim Bowness and London-based Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree), has worked with electro-pioneers Scanner, Muzlimgauze, The Shamen and Faultline, Jazz luminaries Ian Carr and Theo Travis, as well as collaborating with the legendary likes of King Crimson personnel, Robert Fripp, Pat Mastelotto and Mel Collins, and ex-Japan members, Jansen, Barbieri and Karn.

First released in 1979, and then later re-released in 1983, 'Touch Me' was the first recording to be made by the band after signing to Pye. Being Pyes' most expensive signing at the time, much pressure was placed on the The Enid to produce high quality work. The Enid didn't disappoint and recorded one of their finest albums, recorded at their home studios they easily captured the trademark emotion and depth that is synonymous with The Enid.  Now being re-issued on the Inner Sanctum Recordings label to join other Enid albums. 'Touch Me' has been repackaged with all new artwork throughout, in accordance with The Enids' wishes. Included on this release is a digitally remastered version of 'Albion Fair' recorded live as an official bootleg at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1979.

Sterling Roswell/The Psychedelic Ubik

Sterling Roswell, best known as 'Rosco' from Spacemen 3 has finally fulfilled his ambition to create an album of 'Space Age Pop'. Originally Rosco set out to score the music for a forthcoming film - sadly the film was never to materialise - but the project grew into an album and then progressed into a live band.  Recently they have completed a trio of gigs at the newly opened Marquee club in Leicester Square, played at the Kosmiche Club and featured on a TV show. Rosco currently gigs and DJ's regularly.   Featuring the Morricone String Quartet, producer Neil Brockbank, drummer Bob Irwin, guitarists Steve Donnelly and Laine Hines. This album has already received 4 star reviews in Mojo and Record Collector and was awarded 'Album of the Week' in The Organ.

Tim Bowness/Sleepwalker ....import CD single $11.99

Tim Bowness/Sleepwalker

'Sleepwalker' is the first single to be taken from the debut solo album 'My Hotel Year'. This first release from Tim Bowness of No-Man continues the theme of haunting melodies but with a distinctly less electronic feel than his work with Steve Wilson.  The single includes a track that didn't make it into the final cut of the album - Unprotected - another soulful example of Bowness vocals.  Working mainly with David Picking - whom Bowness collaborated with on Rhinoceros 'Tiny Ghosts' (RICEMOCD1) - and Steven Bennet, the trio have also worked with other artists during the 6 months taken to record the album. Hugh Hopper, Roger Eno, Michael Bearpark, Peter Chilvers and Markus Reuter feature alongside Bowness' vocal talent.

Now deleted, we included all 5 tracks from the Hushush CD to form a complete version of the Hednod Sessions.  Mick Harris is influential in the contemporary music scene and remains an underground icon due to his many alter egos, including, Scorn and Lull. Billie Holiday/Ghost of Yesterday ....import double CD $18.99

Billie Holiday/Ghost of Yesterday

This is a double CD containing 50 tracks.  All tracks are digitally re-mastered.   Billie Holiday was perhaps the greatest female jazz singer of all time. Her uniquely languid, naturalistic phrasing and a bottomless reservoir of emotion combined to form a riveting connection with her audience that has never been matched. From her death by heroin overdose in 1959 to the present day, any woman who has picked up a microphone to croon has, whether aware of it or not, done so in the considerable shadow of Billie Holiday.  This is the first release in the 'Hits & Highlights' series from Blue Orchid. Each release includes extensive sleeve notes especially commissioned for the series and full details of the recordings compiled on the releases. Forthcoming releases from the 'Hits & Highlights' series include Yma Sumac, Marlene Dietrich, Billie Eckstine, Peggy Lee, Les Paul & Mary Ford as well as a second volume from Billie Holiday.  Further releases on Blue Orchid will include 'The Heritage of the Blues' series, featuring Josh White, Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Leadbelly, Fats Domino, T Bone Walker, and Muddy Waters.

The Enid/The Spell ....import CD $18.99

The Enid/The Spell

LAST 100 COPIES - An out-of-print title that has long been hard to find, Robert John Godfrey has found the last 100 copies on the Mantella imprint stashed away in his studio.   The Spell is a musical allegory in which the seasons are used to depict the cyclic and seasonal nature of all things. The music begins with the casting of The Spell; a dark Wagnerian fanfare where the allusion to Parsifal is obvious. The bleakness of winter is heard and the ice begins to melt as the first glimmer of dawn breaks.  Elephants Never Die is a cameo. The strong Latin-American flavour in the chorus illustrates the consternation with which the composers view the increasing crisis in South America.   The Sentimental Side Of Mrs James was originally composed in an instrumental form as a wedding gift to a personal friend, hence the title. The words were later added to console a local family who had lost their young son Mark. Thus the dedication.  This also includes an extra track of the live performance of The Song Of Fand.

No-Man/Dry Cleaning Ray ....import CD $18.99

No-Man/Dry Cleaning Ray

Dry Cleaning Ray is no-mans' fifth album and evolved out of the 'Wild Opera' sessions. Once again Tim Bowness and Steve Wilson provide sonic excitement in the form synonymous with no-man.  Previously available on 3rd Stone Records, 'Dry Cleaning Ray' is to be re-released on Hidden Art Recordings to bring it into line with other available no-man titles. Joining 'All That You Are', 'Returning Jesus', 'Heaven Taste', 'Flowermouth' and the soon to be re-released 'Wild Opera' and 'Housewives Hooked On Heroin'. Hidden Art Recordings has one of the most comprehensive no-man discographies available on a single label.  "Tim Bowness and Steven Wilson steer through urban south-east London, in search of the new cabaret, locating it in the most unlikely places. The twitching-curtain pop of 'Diet Mothers' and the slippery grooves on 'Evelyn (The Song Of Slurs)' display real ambition, but the sensual angst of 'Sicknote' is something else again." - London Evening Standard

No-Man/Housewives Hooked on Heroin ....import CD $13.99

No-Man/Housewives Hooked on Heroin

Now reissued on Hidden Art Recordings!  The side project of Tim Bowness and Steve Wilson (Porcupine Tree, I.E.M. and others) which allows the duo to focus on a more vocal, pop orientated sound. As with previous No-Man releases, the witty vocals are delivered perfectly by the flowing vocal talent of Tim Bowness. Underneath these vocals the instrumental skill of Steve Wilson allows Bowness to express the emotions that deeply infuse this work.  Collaborations have always been a strong point and 'Housewives Hooked On Heroin' is no different. A remix from Scanner is included under the title 'Housewives Hooked On Methadone' and the work with Robert Fripp on 'Where I'm Calling From' is another must for fans of this prolific ambient artist.  Previously released on the 3rd Stone label and unavailable for some time now, this re-issue on Hidden Art Recordings brings almost the whole No-Man back catalogue onto a single label. The high standard of artwork and audio associated with No-Man and Hidden Art Recordings has been continued with this recording, a perfect package from such talented artists.

Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Pot Paraiso UFO/Does the Cosmic Shepherd Dream of Electric Tapirs?

As a Japanese soul collective, Acid Mothers Temple and The Melting Paraiso UFO are something of an enigma to the western world, and most likely to eastern ears too. Their music can be described as acid-rock, experimental, psychedelic or a whole host of genres dependent on the listeners mood.  Does The Cosmic Shepherd Dream Of Electric Tapirs is not only a question deserving of an answer, but also the title of Acid Mother Temples first release on Space Age Recordings. Following their recent sell-out tour in the US, there are plans of a similar set of appearances in the UK. A new track, previewed during these tours to spectacular response from the crowd makes its debut on this album.   The future for Acid Mothers Temple and The Melting Paraiso UFO is certain to be as creative as the soul collective can manage. With an almost constantly changing list of members, this distributed commune in Japan is certain to remain a intriguing force within music, whatever its genre.

Amp/L'Amour Invisible ....import CD $18.99

Amp/L'Amour Invisible

From the murky edge of consciousness comes the sound of spirits at play.  Delicate guitar lines weave their way through gently reverberating beats and samples while a lone female voice filters through the mist.  Space in music is always a rare commodity, but Amp achieve it effortlessly.  On their follow-up to last year's compendium of live recordings - Saint Ceclilia Sinsemilla - Amp regulars Richard Walker and Karine Charff are again joined by programmer Olivier Gauthier and German electro-meister Jan Zert. And while the boys create delicate proto-jazz inflected electronic moods, French singer Charff breathes life and l'amour into the mix.  L'Amour Invisible is the band's fourth studio album in six years and was produced by Walker and Gauthier. It follows Saint Cecilia Sinsemilla, Stenorette, astralmoonbeamprojections, the Passe-Present singles compilation, Perception, and debut LP Sirenes.  Thanks to French singer Charff and the band's adventurous approach to song structures, Amp occasionally share textures with Stereolab but it would be both inaccurate and impossible to compare L'Amour Invisible to any other album you've ever heard. Neither the sound of the past or the future; it is music from another dimension.

Amp/Saint Cecilia Sinsemilla ....import CD $18.99

Amp/Saint Cecilia Sinsemilla

Amp create shifting focal points of sound, from scattering synthetic percussion to smears of guitar looped drones to seductive vocals to detailed piano pieces. Saint Cecilia Sinsemilla was recorded by Richard Walker and Karine Charff during their 1999 European tour and features additional recordings from their VPRO Radio 5 session in Holland.   "Amp douse their folk melodies in oceanic effects, with a commitment to fidelity so low it would make a philanderer blush.. Amp have created a soundtrack that actually attempts to address their imaginary film they are scoring." Christopher Porter 'Alternative Press'.

Bark Psychosis/Replay ....import CD $18.99

Bark Psychosis/Replay

Bark Psychosis were one of the leading innovators of rock during their active period of 1988 to 1994. Their music, while almost traditional rock is better described as post rock. Their use of samples to create textural soundscapes brings a whole new sound to the genre. Post rock was speared-headed by Bark Psychosis when the genre was staid and unchanging, one of Bark Psychosis innovations is the use of volume, not too exciting you might think but as the barrage of guitars gives way to the soft vocals and synthesizers you’ll notice the dynamics that infuse their work.  The artwork feature photographs of the St Johns Church where this live recording was made back in 1991, the situation perfectly reflecting the style of Bark Psychosis and their unique sound is enhanced by the acoustics.  Starring alongside the 5 live tracks are some very special moments in the history of Bark Psychosis. Re-mastered versions of Reserve Shotgunman and Hex make their first appearance since their release as b-sides and are joined by an ultra-rare track that all good Psychosis fans will have heard of - Clawhammer. Originally released in 1988 alongside an extract from Spacemen 3 Dreamweapon, this flexi-disc remains a collectors item for both Bark Psychosis fans and Spacemen 3 devotee's alike. Also featured is a remix of Big Shot.

Bass Communion/Bass Communion (1) ....import CD $18.99

Bass Communion/Bass Communion (1)

The debut Bass Communion album long deleted now re-issued in a limited edition on the Hidden Art Recordings label with five separate interchangeable sleeves printed on thick matt card.  An album of music without rhythm, written and recorded by Steve Wilson (Porcupine Tree/ No-Man). The album also features samples of Robert Fripp from a tape of soundscapes recorded during sessions for No-Man. Bass Communion is the first release in series of solo projects from Steve Wilson. This album is released in a limited edition format with five separate interchangeable sleeves packaged with each album. It all begins with a barely audible melody, tantalizingly hidden beneath the crackles of a bygone year. It all ends with a looped sample soaring above a dream inspired, shimmering backdrop, which leaves you entranced and clamouring for more. It is Bass Communion and it is nothing like you will ever hear.  Steve Wilson (No-Man, Porcupine Tree) has created an understated masterpiece of surreal instrumental beauty, merging the blissed out popscapes of No-Man with the experimental work outs of Porcupine Tree to astonishing effect on this album. Be it the saxophone nirvana of "Drugged" which effortlessly pulls you into its free form discordant bliss, before somehow mutating into a beauteous, spiralling, breathtaking dreamscape, or the brooding, 21st century tribalism's of "Orphan Coal", Bass Communion operates somewhere in the ether, never quite touchable but always tangible. Quite simply, the more you listen to Bass Communion, the more beautiful it becomes, a thousand ideas free-fall out at you at every turn, cascading melodies and counter-harmonies working around every refrain, but all used with enough space and restraint as to heighten the effect even more.

Bass Communion/Bass Communion (2) ....import CD $18.99

Bass Communion/Bass Communion (2)

Bass Communion is the name Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree/No-Man) gives to recordings he has been making since 1994 in an ambient and/or electronic vein. The music is comparable to the more ambient and spacious moments of Porcupine Tree and No-Man. The focus is on stripped-down textures and careful, intriguing arrangements, though often spiked with a dark, rougher edge that suggests tension and deep undercurrents as much as quiet meditation.  This is the second Bass Communion CD, now reissued by Headphone Dust. The album includes the Robert Fripp collaboration from the limited EP that came with the original (and now deleted) issue of the album added as a bonus track, bringing the disc up to 72 minutes in length.

Bass Communion/Bass Communion (Remixed) ....import CD $18.99

Bass Communion/Bass Communion (Remixed)

In early 2002 Steve Wilson (Porcupine Tree/No-Man) invited many of his favourite musicians from the electronic, ambient and experimental scene to use the second Bass Communion CD as source material for new pieces. The result is an 80 minute CD "Bass Communion". Artists appearing on the CD are Lull, Monolake, Carbon Boy, Bola, Rapoon, Black Faction, Rhinoceros, Vidna Obmana and Jonathan Coleclough/Colin Potter.  Headphone Dust is a new label set up by the founder and leader of Porcupine Tree, Steve Wilson, to issue music by his two solo projects; the ambient/electronic music he makes as Bass Communion, and the eccentric hybrid of psycadelia, jazz and krautrock, I.E.M. All releases are beautifully packaged, often in limited editions.

Cipher/No Ordinary Man ....import CD $18.99

Cipher/No Ordinary Man

From the murky depths of the ambient ocean, Cipher surface with this tremendous first album to be released on Hidden Art Recordings. Deep, rolling waves of sound pulse, build and eventually break as the loops appear and disappear. The magical sounds of Theo Travis on soprano sax, alto flute, piano and keyboards gently sway from foreground to background as the fretless bass and loops and samples from Dave Sturt move the music forward towards it's inevitable emotional conclusion.  Cipher - originally formed in 1996 to compose a soundtrack to Alfred Hitchcocks silent classic The Lodger - is the combination of the two well established artists, Theo Travis and Dave Sturt. Theo is well known for his work with the likes of Porcupine Tree and Gong, Dave is a long time producer and member of Jade Warrior.  Guest musicians making an appearance on the album include Steve Wilson (Porcupine Tree/No-Man), Richard Barbieri (Japan) and the Rabbi Gaddy Zerbib as special vocalist on track 6 Desert Song.

Darkroom/Daylight ....import CD $15.99

Darkroom/Daylight

Darkroom offers further evidence that real musical innovation and exploration are now strictly the domain of the independent music realm. On its full-length debut Daylight, The British act, comprised of vocalist Tim Bowness, keyboardist/rhythmatist Andrew 'Os' Ostler and guitarist/loopologist Mike Bearpark, offers a composite of pounding drum'n'bass-ish rhythms, spiraling ambient backdrops and netherworldly atmospheres. Vocally, Bowness shifts between wordless harmonizing and scalding delivery of lyrics often steeped in acidic desires and depravity. It's potent stuff. The Carpetworld EP takes its name from the most deliriously twisted track off Daylight. It adrenalizes the piece with hyper-beats fully suitable for e-head frenzies or living room chill-outs depending on your leanings. Both releases are serious exercises in butt-kickery. Do what it takes to find them. - Anil Prasad/Innerviews

A constant pushing of the boundaries of sound to create a series of records and live shows which defy description and which stand as genuinely original and innovative in an era of tried and tested formulas.  Since forming EAR as both a solo and collaborative project in 1990, Sonic Boom has so far released 5 studio albums on a variety of labels in the UK and USA. Now settled on the Space Age Recording label he helped to form, EAR are all set to release their most audacious and ambitious record yet.   The results are simply unlike anything else you will have heard, creating an incredible album of atonal wonder and spell binding intoxication.  EAR have, without doubt, pushed the boundaries of sound to a new level with "Continuum" and with live shows promised in the coming months, the mind enhancing spectacle of what they can achieve in a live setting should have us all watching impatiently for those dates to come around.

E.A.R./Data Rape ....import CD $18.99

E.A.R./Data Rape

The sound collages on Data Rape were created using 8 human voice synthesizers, originally marketed as Speak and Spell toys by Texas Instruments in the 70s. These instruments have been customized with added switches, buttons, knobs and wiring to give phoneme looping, random phase generation, various modulations, pitch shifting and other non-standard effects.  This process, called circuit bending, exploits the inherent instabilities in the circuitry of audio toys, radios and other sound making instruments by sending electronic signals and data to and from previously unrelated circuit board points giving unique, unpredictable and highly unusual sounds.  The results are simply unlike anything else you will have heard, creating an incredible album of atonal wonder and spell binding intoxication.

E.A.R./The Koner Experiment ....import CD $18.99

E.A.R./The Koner Experiment

Deep, rolling waves of sound producing emotions and thoughts like no other style can. Building atmospheres, textures and moods in a 3 ring circus as the effects alter, hypnotize and change the soundscapes throughout this 12 track CD - now featuring 2 extra cuts from the same sessions, previously unavailable.

Aerie Farie Nonsense - The title says it all.  A romantic mytholological romp of Wagnerian proportions.  It is heavily steeped in Arthurian and Celtic legend.   The central defining work is 'Fand.'  'Fand' is conceived as a large scale symphonic tone poem for orchestra and electronic instruments.  This album is the second in a series of digitally remastered Enid albums to be repackaged with enhanced artwork in a definiteive version on the Inner Sanctum label.  This concept album originally released in 1977 contains the reconstructed version of the band's epic tone poem, 'Fand' which was reworked in 1999 and gives an additional 4 tracks and 25 minutes plus of bonus material.

The artwork and audio quality established over our previous 5 releases have been strictly adhered to, forming what is going to be the most definitive collection of The Enid material ever produced.  This album, regarded by Robert John Godfrey as some of The Enids best work is sure to please the die-hard fans as much as newcomers to what most people - music critic or not - call "the most under-rated band the UK has ever produced".

The Enid/Something Wicked This Way Comes ....import CD $18.99

The Enid/Something Wicked This Way Comes

'Something Wicked This Way Comes' is the third in a series of digitally remastered Enid albums to be repackaged with enhanced artwork and additional bonus material in a definitive version on the Inner Sanctum label.  Originally released in 1983 'Something Wicked This Way Comes' was a major departure for The Enid marking a new period of growth after the band split in 1980. Composed at the height of the debate concerning nuclear weapons; with the use of vocals and a contemporary political theme (the threat of nuclear war). The nuclear thread was followed through a series of short songs and instrumentals, with nursery rhyme lyrics which skewered the super powers. The album was a major success for the band, and remains their best-selling album to date.

The Enid/Tripping the Light Fantastic ....import CD $18.99

The Enid/Tripping the Light Fantastic

'Tripping The Light Fantastic' is the fourth in a series of digitally remastered Enid albums to be repackaged with enhanced artwork and additional bonus material in a definitive version on the Inner Sanctum label.  Originally released in 1993 'Tripping the Light Fantastic' was written by Robert John Godfrey and marked the first recording since 1988. It was an instrumental concept album about science and scientists: an allegorical polemic. The album reflects Robert John Godfrey's increasing interest in Quantum Mechanics and the new ideas which place our human condition as conscious beings at the center of science. It benefited from the playing of guitarist Nick May and bassist/programmer Max Read. Musically, the album pushed the Enid further ahead, house beats punctuating the synth and guitar lines. The band were intent on being heard, and to prove the point, 'Gateway' and 'Tripping the Light Fantastic' rank as their loudest tracks. In response they received their best press notices for years: The Guardian called them, "the absolute masters of their art and their achievements over more than twenty years of creative work set them apart from everything else which calls itself 'progressive'".

The Enid/White Goddess ....import CD $18.99

The Enid/White Goddess

'White Goddess' is the fifth in a series of digitally remastered Enid albums to be repackaged with enhanced artwork and additional bonus material in a definitive version on the Inner Sanctum label.  Originally released in 1997 'White Goddess' is an instrumental album with a Celtic flavour.  It is 1997 and The Enid look back on a long and creative history. For our life to have a continuing purpose, not only do we need to be able to share this history with the new generation coming up, we also need to carry on composing new music. The Enid moves on recognizing that we cannot live in the past even if we were to try.  Rather we must, all of us, live in that unnerving singularity where the future invades the present. Our little lives are actually a great and sometimes perilous adventure from which there is no escape and no going back. Enjoy it while you can.

Insides/Sweet Tip ....import CD $18.99

Insides/Sweet Tip

A new century demands evolution, invention and fresh new ideas - none more so than in our beloved field of pop where each new band seems to aspire to nothing more than a karaoke homage to the past. Thankfully, Brighton's Insides have something a little more special to offer. After the widespread critical acclaim for their debut Euphoria back in '95, the band return with a sparkling new record with which to purge the reactionary, retro dullards.  Drawing from the same creative well as fellow ambient pioneers Eno and Stereolab, Insides' second album oozes class and sensuality. Sultry vocals weave a smoky path through keyboard loops, flutes and Starsky & Hutch guitars to produce a light and jazzy slice of Bohemia with a strongly continental flavour. In essence, it is a thoroughly modern record.  Peppered with plenty of "Doo, doo, dooos" and breathy harmonies, Sweet Tip conjures up images of polo necks and Gauloises, outside cafes, and bicycles drifting by on leaf-strewn streets. But if none of this quite makes sense, then perhaps Julian can explain. "It should make you gag to hear it again, but never get any closer to understanding exactly why you like it. That's what I look for in music."

The inside story... Insides are Kirsty Yates and Julian Tardo who started writing together eight years ago as Earwig before metamorphosing into Insides. The noisy, more experimental Earwig released one album, Under My Skin I'm Laughing, before Dmitri Voulis left and the two founders chose calmer waters to swim in with Insides. Sweet Tip features the additional talents of Noel Watson on drums, Malcolm 'Salsaman' Salaman on piano, Lawrence Jones on flute and Emma Papper on clarinet.

Lefthand/On Discovering Fire ....import CD $15.99

Lefthand/On Discovering Fire

'On Discovering Fire' is the second album from London's Lefthand. It is the follow up to 1999's 'Minus Eight' which was a vinyl only release but still well received by the Sunday Times, Losing Today, Record Collector and Record Mart. The band started in 1996 and released their first EP through Rough Trade Marketing in 1997, another EP followed on Earworm in 1998 before the debut LP. 2001 sees the release of the second album, which shows a more focused side to their song writing. There are many influences and although the songs remain dark, the post punk comparisons are less obvious than on their debut album. There are hints of Spacemen 3 'Accelerator', Joy Division and Can at the end of '6.66 Hertz', generally however Lefthand have created their own sound, this is the best shown on tracks like 'Lullaby' and 'Broken Machine'.

John Massoni/Stillborn Dreams ....import CD $18.99

John Massoni/Stillborn Dreams

John Massoni, after wowing us with the splendid Sundowner Sessions, has returned with his new, full-length studio album,  Stillborn Dreams.  Once again Massoni shows his love for experimenting with sound and this more than shows in his work. His use of samples and their arrangement makes you believe he could almost be tweaking and looping as the music is being played, such is their spontaneity, yet the songs have such atmosphere and depth that there's no way this could be 'off the cuff' experimentation, could it?

John Masoni with Sonic Boom/The Sundowner Sessions ....import CD mini album $12.99

John Masoni with Sonic Boom/The Sundowner Sessions

Sonic Boom and John Masoni first met when Masoni was in London recording for Blast First. When asked who'd he like to remix a song Masoni mentioned Sonic's name, having long admired Spacemen 3 and Spectrum and Sonic's work with sound and his ideas toward minimalism. They struck up a bond and every time Sonic came to Seattle to do a show he'd stay at Masoni's digs. He was now there for a few days and they were hitting some thrift stores and the like looking for cool stuff, spending some time talking about music and such. Sonic knew Masoni was kind of going thru a personal crisis in regards to where his life was going. Masoni had lost a lot of faith in his music. Then one day, Sonic locked Masoni up, downstairs with him and said they were going to get some recording done. Masoni made up all kinds of excuses to not do this, one being his lack of proper equipment, etc.

Over to John Masoni; "But the guy can make something out of almost anything. He'd just pick out a tape of mine (I have a bunch of tapes with sound and drone experiments), and work something into a piece. His focus and ability not to be undermined by the limits surrounding him is really amazing to watch. We worked well into the night - thus, the Sundowner Sessions were born. Things I learned from Sonic: less is often more, first trick to take out is the drums (ha ha), and that you can make music from almost any source. Sure, there was some other stuff I learned but I'll keep that under my hat for now."

Muslimgauze/Dar Es Salaam ....import CD $18.99

Muslimgauze/Dar Es Salaam

Dar es Salaam is an exploration of noise, beats and sound. A wonderful variety of what Muslimgauze did best - the first from this legend since "Sufiq" in 1999. Fast and furious dancefloor tracks next to ebbing guitars next to noisy repetition and distortion.  What can really be said about a legend? Through 90+ releases, Muslimgauze has managed to make a believer out of even the most sceptical music enthusiast. The onslaught started back in 1982 with the Piano Room cassette and continued through the eighties with such 'hits' as 1984's Buddhist On Fire, 85's Blinded Horses, 87's Coup D'etat, and 88's The Rape of Palestine. 1988's 'untitled' cassette on Soleilmoon and 89's Iran CD on Staalplaat were the first two on those respective labels, which continue to release Muslimgauze material today.  Enigmatic, disturbing, provocative, occult, uncompromising and unlistenable are all words that have been used to describe his music. We commented to him once that the intentional distortion on one of his tracks almost blew up the PA speakers, Bryn said "Good that's what I want to happen!" Music is not and should not be safe, MUSLIMGAUZE made it bloody dangerous in lots of ways. Bryn we will miss you.

No-Man/All That You Are ....import EP CD $13.99

No-Man/All That You Are

Tim Bowness and Steve Wilson from Porcupine Tree make a welcome reappearance as No-Man after a brief respite to bring this us this 5 track mini-album before releasing their new Album ‘All The Blue Changes.’ If you were in any doubt as to why you started listening to No-Man, or want to know what it is that makes them special – simply listen to this.  It features all the trademark sounds of No-Man – wonderful melodies blending with vocals - and all this in a lunch-break sized snack, a perfect introduction or return to No-Man.  'All That You Are' first appeared on No-Man's critical and cult success, 'Returning Jesus', and this mini-album showcases the London-based duo at its most lyrical and traditional.  The new radio edit of 'All That You Are', a beautiful and unique interpretation of classic ballad form, is issued alongside previously unreleased and much sought after recordings from the 'Returning Jesus' sessions including the highly charged domestic drama of 'Chelsea Cap' and the moody, textural lament of 'Darkroom'.  Features guest appearances from Colin Edwin, Steve Jansen and Theo Travis.

No-Man/Carolina Skeletons ....CD Mini Album $12.99

No-Man/Carolina Skeletons

Following the previous year's magnificent "Dry Cleaning Ray," NO-MAN return with one of the most jaw-droppingly gorgeous mini-albums of the year.   "Carolina Skeletons" is a thing of rare beauty; the title track, all lilting pianos, free-flowing guitars, surreal background echoes and heart-in-mouth melodies, it harks to "Flowermouth" era No-Man, but oozes a sense of melancholy and nostalgia all of its own.  "Something Falls" takes Tim Bowness's unique voice as it's focus and through a flurry of acoustic fills, string pad backing and haunting piano, creates a simply breathtaking 3 minutes. "Close Your Eyes" gnaws at the heartstrings, fusing an almost tribal percussion Pattern with a plaintive guitar line that flows effortlessly around you before unleashing an overdriven storm of sheer brilliance. Calm is restored, but still the sadness hangs in the air for all to hear.   With "Carolina Reprise" Steven Wilson's music takes to the fore, with that intoxicating piano refrain given full freedom on its journey to your heart.   Unmistakably genius, unmistakably No-Man.

No-Man/Returning Jesus ....import CD $18.99

No-Man/Returning Jesus

No-Man (the duo of Tim Bowness and Steven Wilson) have finally completed their long-awaited new album "Returning Jesus" The album, the band's first since 1996's 'Wild Opera', is No-Man's most ambitious and timeless to date, featuring a more organic band sound than heard on previous releases.  Uniquely and effortlessly combining disparate influences from chamber jazz and classical musics (Miles Davis/Steve Reich) to experimental pop (Eno/Talk Talk/Pink Floyd) with a singer-songwriter intimacy and intensity, 'Returning Jesus' ranks as the finest achievement in the band's decade long career.  Guest performers include Steve Jansen (Rain Tree Crow/Japan) on drums and Procupine Tree's Colin Edwin on bass/double bass for most tracks, in addition are trumpeters Ian Carr (Nucleus) and Ian Dixon, saxophonist Theo Travis, additional production from David Kosten (Faultline) and guitar contributions from acclaimed singer-songwriter Ben Christophers.  The full tracklisting for "Returning Jesus" is: "Only Rain", "No Defence", "Close Your Eyes", "Carolina Skeletons", "Outside The Machine", "Returning Jesus", "Slow It All Down", "Lighthouse" and "All That You Are."

No-Man/Wild Opera ....import CD $18.99

No-Man/Wild Opera

Having been unavailable for some considerable time since its last pressing, Wild Opera is ready to charm you again just like the first time you heard it.  Wild Opera contains thirteen tracks of No-Mans distinctive experimental pop music, including their single Housewives Hooked On Heroin. No-Man emerged in the spring of 1990 creating a sophisticated blend of experimental pop with liberal doses of jazz, classical and contemporary ambient dance influences. The band's sound was memorably dubbed "the ultimate fusion of the dance beat, the love song and the symphony".  This album has some of the finest collaborators joining the already top line-up of Tim Bowness and Steve Wilson; Richard Barbieri and Robert Fripp provide sample material, Natalie Box features on Radiant City and Pretty Genius with violin and Mel Collins plays Saxophone on Radiant City.  "This latest album takes the No-Man tradition of change one step further - this time you don't know what to expect from track to track" - Future Music

Reverberation/New Soul-Reverberation Remixes by Muslimgauze ....import EP CD $15.99

Reverberation/New Soul-Reverberation Remixes by Muslimgauze

Take one legend of cutting edge music add the vibrancy and enthusiasm of a young, French, blissed-out psychedelic band and leave to simmer for 26 minutes. The result; 5 tracks of devastating bass lines, tripped out melodies and exhilarating uniqueness which will leave a scar on your soul as well as your speakers.  The idea was simple, let Muslimgauze remix some Reverberation tracks; the outcome was simply breathtaking. From the instant "Blue E" explodes from the speakers, it is clear that genius is at work. Ripping the heart out of the original, Muslimgauze implant their own mix of militant politics and spiritual awareness all over the tracks.  Bryn Jones (aka Muslimgauze) sadly died last year, but through his incredible back catalogue, his spirit, his enthusiasm, his passions and his politics still burn strongly. "New Soul" is a more than worthy addition to that legendary oeuvre and it is a record that seems truly destined to find it's rightful place in many hearts.

Rhinoceros/Tiny Ghosts ....import CD $18.99

Rhinoceros/Tiny Ghosts

Tiny Ghosts is the official debut CD release from Rhinoceros, aka Birmingham-based multi-instrumentalist, Gramophone percussionist and No-Man collaborator, David Picking.   Featuring a distinctive contribution from vocalist Tim Bowness (No-Man) and the turntable skills of DJ Log, the album combines the creaking atmospherics of Papa M with the cut-and-paste aesthetics of DJ Shadow to create a quiet gem of organic, reflective electronica.

Silver Apples/Remixes ....import double CD $18.99

Silver Apples/Remixes

Ladies and gentlemen, we are not alone. Somewhere in a sonic laboratory in New York two very real extra-terrestrial pop composers have awoken from their astral slumbers to enchant their adopted public once more. Their name?  Silver Apples.  Amazingly, the first time the duo treated us to their other-worldly electronic rapture was 1967. At a time when the music world was embracing the summer of love, Silver Apples released a self-titled debut album of technospacerock. Played on oscillators and bizarre second-hand electronic equipment, the record so blew everyone's minds, man, that it spent 10 weeks in the Billboard Top 100. The band released two more albums before synth maestro Simeon and drummer Dan Taylor returned to their pods for a chryogenic snooze.

Fast forward 30 years and the Apples were back to record their fourth album, Beacon, with Steve Albini. This 1997 release was quickly followed by Decatur the next year. Again, both records sent the critics in a whirl and the band on the road until a tragic traffic accident in November 1999 left Simeon paralysed in hospital with a broken neck.   Miraculously, in the space of just four months he recovered sufficiently to embark upon their latest venture - a mesmerising remix album featuring the cream of the 3rd Stone, The Hallowe'en Society, and Space Age Recordings/Rayman labels.   Reverberation, Colorsound, Darkroom, and Bass Communion all get the Silver Apples treatment on a collection of tracks listed as Simeon Meets...It's All Scared Now, Little Angel, Estragon, and Drugged. Just four numbers - but clocking in at over 50 minutes - Silver Apples Remixes is a wonderful and timely reminder of the extraordinary talent of this highly original act. The songs may not be theirs, but the sound is undeniably silver hued and tasting of apples.  Silver Apples Remixes comes with a bonus CD of the four original tracks in a limited edition run of 1000 copies only in a gatefold sleeve.

Spacemen 3/For All the F****d Up Children of this World ....import CD $15.99

Spacemen 3/For All the F****d Up Children of this World

This is almost where it all began. Spacemen 3’s first ever recording session in 1984 released on Sympathy For The Record Industry. Recorded when they didn’t even have a bass player this is Spacemen 3 at what you might think would be their most basic, yet all the emotional intensity is easy to hear. For those of you interested in the history of Spacemen 3, then this is the place to start.  This is the original release featuring the early versions of Spacemen 3 favourites ‘Things’ll Never Be the Same’, ‘Walkin’ With Jesus’ and ‘2:35’. It also contains an alternate version on ‘Things’ll Never Be the Same’ and ‘Walkin’ With Jesus’.

Spacemen 3/Forged Prescriptions

This long awaited double CD is finally set for release.  For those who were in the know, seminal act Spacemen 3 were at the forefront of the newly emerging experimental sound in the mid 1980's.  From their early releases like ‘Dreamweapon’ to the later albums like ‘Playing With Fire’ you can chart their experiments and how they grew. This double album is from a mid point in their career and is how Spacemen 3 wanted their work to sound. Some might say these are the definitive versions of many songs released on other albums.

Spacemen 3/Live in Europe 1989 ....import CD $18.99

Spacemen 3/Live in Europe 1989

Cult band Spacemen 3 recorded four studio and one live album before their demise in 1990, the main song writers going on to form Spiritualized (Jason Pierce) and Spectrum (Pete Kember) This live album was recorded in Germany during the bands European tour of 1989, which was sadly to be one of their last live performances.  Starting with their regular opening song 'Rollercoaster' a building, pulsing track that works up the emotions ready for the rest of the set, including; '2:35' a Spacemen 3 classic and regular since 1984, 'Things'll Never Be The Same,' 'Revolution,' and their usual last song 'Suicide.'   Also included are tracks that didn't regularly make the shows, such as; 'Bo Diddley Jam' an instrumental show of Spacemen 3's trademark drones and feedback, 'Lord Can You Hear Me' and 'I Believe It', both emotionally moving pieces from 'Playing with Fire' (also on Space Age Recordings) but very rarely played live.

Spacemen 3/Playing with Fire ....import double CD $18.99

Spacemen 3/Playing with Fire

The seminal Spacemen 3. They shaped a genre in the 80's and remain to many one of the most important bands ever. Over their time together they created some of the most incredible music ever to grace the earth and Space Age are now in the process of making those classic albums available again as well as finally letting some of the unreleased and bootlegged material see an official release.

Spacemen 3/Recurring ....import CD $18.99

Spacemen 3/Recurring

As the last album before their unfortunate demise, this represents not only a significant part of Spacemen 3's history - but also the future of Spacemen 3 protagonists Jason Pierce and Pete Kember. The first half of the album is written by Pete Kember and clearly shows the direction he wanted Spacemen 3 to move - a direction he was later to explore with great success in his early Spectrum work and later with his more experimental 'Experimental Audio Research'.  Splitting the two halves is a true Spacemen 3 cover of Mudhoney's 'When Tomorrow Hits' serving as a perfect reminder of when the band were working together in their fantastic early years.  Jason Pierces' half is a much more epic affair, very much the opposite direction to Sonics minimalist approach and showing the love of highly arranged music he was to favour with Spiritualized.  Jasons' material features sweeping effects and blues style riffs which were later to form the basis of his next project 'Spiritualized', along with gospel choirs he became renowned for.  Rumor has it that Jason had already begun planning his next project with members Carruthers and Mattock before Spacemen 3 had officially dissolved. However much the arguments had spoiled the partnership and heart of Spacemen 3, they couldn't avoid making the same fantastic music throughout their history. Music which has yet to find a true successor and still influences artists today.  Packaged in high quality artwork and re-mastered to the same high standards that saw Spacemen 3 'Forged Prescriptions' feature in the Top 5 'Collectables of 2003' in Magnet Magazine. Spacemen 3 'Recurring' is yet another vital step in the history of Spacemen 3.

Spacemen 3/Taking Drugs to Make Music to Take Drugs To ....import CD $18.99

Spacemen 3/Taking Drugs to Make Music to Take Drugs To

The latest in the series of classic Spacemen 3 re-issues from Space Age Recordings is the cult demos compilation “Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To”.   It remains hard to this day to argue with that fact as there is a sense of urgency and freshness about these sessions that never quite came to the fore in the album versions. Despite being recorded at a time when the internal wranglings and mistrusts which would eventually destroy the band were yet to become evident, there is still an amazing sense of bleakness and nihilistic outpourings on “Taking Drugs…” which gives an unerring sense of the finite, the desolate and the life ravaging problems that were to encompass them in years to come and, as an album, it is all the stronger for that outlook.  Now Space Age Recordings are set to release the definitive version of this underground classic, complete with their now customary exquisite packaging and including a previously unreleased version of “Transparent Radiation”, recorded during the same sessions. “Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To” remains to this day a phenomenal insight into the minds of one of the UK’s most important bands of the era and because of that, is as vital a release as any you will hear all year.

Spectrum/Forever Alien ....import CD $18.99

Spectrum/Forever Alien

Available again after being out of print since 1999 on Warner Brothers in the USA and Space Age Recordings in the UK. Warner brought you the 10 track version but Space Age bring you more than that - we have released this in its full 13 track glory!   Pete Kember, lurking deep beneath the flowing analogue synthesizers, the aching filter and the warped lyrical nous of Sonic Boom, is the genius that drove the legendary Spacemen 3 to their furthest extremes; the genius that takes Experimental Audio Research beyond all our tripped-out fantasies and the genius that is Spectrum.  Spectrum has created one of the finest collections of hypnotic, blissed-out, experimental perfection to date. From the brooding opening strains of the single 'Feels like I'm slipping away' through the hypnotic wonder of the likes of 'Owsley' and 'Like', the oriental refrains of 'The End' and closing self explanatory minimalism of 'Sine Study', this is by far the most complete offering yet including the Spectrum-ised version of the Spacemen classic 'How Does It Feel'.

Spectrum/Refractions: Thru the Rhythms of Time 1989-1997 ....import CD $18.99

Spectrum/Refractions: Thru the Rhythms of Time 1989-1997

Spectrum, the alter ego of Pete Kember (Experimental Audio Research and Spacemen 3) has selected some of his finest tracks and agreed to release them on Space Age Recordings.   Sonic Boom/Spectrum/Pete Kember started producing solo work shortly before the end of Spacemen 3 and released his first solo project, Sonic Boom 'Spectrum' in 1990. From the success of this release he signed to Silvertone Records and released the highly sought after and respected 'Soul Kiss (glide divine)' in 1991 and continued releasing work through Silvertone until 1994 when the unique 'Highs, Lows & Heavenly Blows' was released to rave reviews.  Later on Spectrum moved to Space Age Recordings where he released the groundbreaking 'Forever Alien'. This both astounded and confused critics worldwide and remains a perfect example of the use of technology in experimental music.   'Refractions' takes the best and hardest to find output of Spectrum, combines it with the excellent artwork synonymous with Space Age Recordings and releases it at a realistic price. It's been said many times before, but this is an essential purchase for the serious Spectrum fan and also a great for anyone investigating the post Spacemen 3 world of rock.
